Much of Oxford<\/strong> will be missing this New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong>, either at the Sugar Bowl<\/strong> or spending the holiday\u00a0with loved ones out of town. Ajax<\/strong> has bravely volunteered, however, to ship in a few guys from the delta to make sure that those of us left behind have a party to ring in the new year.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Weezer New Year<\/strong>\u201d will consist of four musicians – Starlin Browning<\/strong>, Reed Smith<\/strong>, Jesse Mansfield<\/strong> and Ethan Frink<\/strong> – who have been active in North Mississippi<\/strong> with their own respective bands. Members of Fides<\/strong>, Water Spaniel<\/strong>, The Tallahatchies<\/strong>, and Greater Pyrenees<\/strong> are all represented in the lineup.<\/p>\n

The band will be playing the entirety of Weezer\u2019s 1996 album \u201cPinkerton<\/strong>.\u201d Though this shindig has occurred each of the past three Halloween<\/strong> nights in Cleveland, MS<\/strong> (\u201cHalloweezer<\/strong>,\u201d as they call it), the band was looking to take the show on the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did the first Halloweezer at the request of the only local venue in Cleveland,\u201d explains Jesse Mansfield. \u201cThe four of us in the band were all in the same recording program at Delta State University<\/strong>, the Delta Music Institute<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe we\u2019ll get it right this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though the band is not technically local, they have several ties to Oxford and its music scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur drummer Ethan is from Oxford, and plays in several local bands,\u201d Mansfield says. \u201cWe\u2019ve all played there and have been wanting to bring the show to another place and time besides Cleveland on Halloween.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the music itself, Mansfield says that Weezer was not necessarily an obvious choice. It has, however, proved to be a popular one.<\/p>\n

\u201cWeezer is what we were propositioned with. They have enough material that everyone knows, and it\u2019s all glorious, unashamed rock n\u2019 roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Pinkerton\u2019 is easily the best album they did. \u2018Blue<\/strong>\u2019 comes close, but everything was laid out on \u2018Pinkerton\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Ajax might just be the perfect venue for such an unapologetic band on such a fun night; Mansfield likens Weezer to an Ajax casserole, in that both are \u201creally, really hot for like two minutes, and then pretty much un-reheat-able after that.\u201d<\/p>\n
