not unlike the lights of an especially charismatic 10th grader, the kid who\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><i>knows <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">things &#8211; is from the <strong>Lucia Berlin<\/strong> story \u201cTeenage Punk,\u201d collected in the late writer\u2019s recently published magnum opus:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><i>A Manual for Cleaning Women<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">It was briefly on the indie bestseller list,\u201d said <strong>Richard Howorth<\/strong>, owner of Oxford&#8217;s Square Books, noting that the store has carried the collection since it was released by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in August.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">[And I erroneously identified in my last column as\u00a0a contender for this year&#8217;s\u00a0Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, which, though worthy, is not.]\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Teenage Punk\u201d is one of the tales that Berlin\u2019s son Dan said\u00a0cut close to the bone, as do so many of the stories in this collection whether you knew the author &#8211; as\u00a0the writer <strong>Elizabeth Geoghegan<\/strong> did &#8211; or discovered her yesterday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">In a\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><i>Paris Review\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">remembrance published the month of the release of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><i>Cleaning Women<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">, Geoghegan wrote: &#8220;[Berlin&#8217;s] stories, populated with alcoholics and addicts, are rendered with an empathy, disgust, and ruthless wit that echo the devastating circumstances of her own life.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Which apparently includes the real-life pain-in-the-ass upon whom the character of Jesse was based in &#8220;Teenage Punk.&#8221; Reluctant to read too much into it on the record, Dan Berlin said of his mother&#8217;s accomplishment: &#8220;It\u2019s amazing work and\u00a0the work\u00a0should be the focus.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">When I posted part one of the Berlin\u00a0columns last month &#8211; noting the wide praise and welcome it was receiving &#8211; I got a few nibbles from people living between the hard covers of literary fiction.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">[It was Auden who said, &#8220;Thank God for books as an alternative to conversation.&#8221;]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">One response was from Devon Frick, 42, publisher of an Onion-styled website called\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><i>Lankville Daily News.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"637\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28341\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg?resize=600%2C637\" alt=\"Lucia Berlin\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg?resize=283%2C300&amp;ssl=1 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><i>A Manual for Cleaning Women<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">\u00a0and &#8220;Teenage Punk&#8221; in particular, Frick said: &#8220;What makes the story so<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">effective is how much is communicated despite the succinctness of only a few pages. We get a concise portrait of the disintegration of a marriage in step with the disintegration of a social order in step with the disintegration of an old house, all in less than a page.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">And then all this is cast aside by the beauty of a rare natural event as if Berlin says, &#8220;This is what matters. It&#8217;s an uncommonly rare piece&#8211; I can&#8217;t recall reading anything quite like it.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Nor can I, although Berlin&#8217;s work is strangely reminiscent of Roberto Bolano [1953-2003] despite Lucia&#8217;\u2019s brevity and the Chilean&#8217;s narratives that go on and on, as though the true tale were hidden in the digressions. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Lucia Berlin lived the writer&#8217;s life while working a host of menial jobs to make a living. She then landed at the <strong>University of Colorado<\/strong> in Boulder and taught there from 1994-2000. The students\u00a0Berlin inspired there have helped keep her work before the reading public since her death in 2004.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Here&#8217;s hoping someone stumbles upon a trunk of unpublished Berlin manuscripts and a 21st century Max Perkins is on hand to shepherd them to print.
