{"id":28335,"date":"2015-10-20T13:20:44","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T18:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=28335"},"modified":"2015-11-23T16:23:22","modified_gmt":"2015-11-23T21:23:22","slug":"a-manual-for-cleaning-women-the-stories-of-lucia-berlin-part-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/a-manual-for-cleaning-women-the-stories-of-lucia-berlin-part-one\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;A Manual for Cleaning Women&#8221;: The Stories of Lucia Berlin, Part One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The name kept coming to me near the end of the summer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Lucia Berlin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Short story writer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">On NPR, in the <i>New Yorker<\/i> and <i>Kirkus Review\u2014<\/i>through the open window it seemed\u2014came word of a superb collection of stories by a deceased author worthy of greater notoriety. Then, reading in bed in the middle of the afternoon, I perused the summer 2015 issue of the <i>Paris Review<\/i> [No. 213] and found a story in the back titled \u201cB.F. and Me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">By Lucia Berlin.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/manual-cleaning.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28338\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/manual-cleaning.jpg?resize=600%2C314\" alt=\"manual cleaning\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/manual-cleaning.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/manual-cleaning.jpg?resize=300%2C157&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Finally, the recognition hit me hard enough to bounce around the gray walls of the room: I <i>know<\/i> this person. I have written about this person, a wanderer who wrote sentences like this: <i>\u201cBad smells can be nice&#8230;at bullfights I always liked to sit high up, in order to see it all, like at the opera, but if you sit next to the barrera you can smell the bull.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Back in 2008, when I wrote for television in Los Angeles, I was hanging out near a picnic table behind a club for people who drink a lot of coffee and try to sit still for an hour in an attempt to learn things that are of use in a world of bad smells.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">[For reference, see the Berlin story, \u201cHer First Detox.\u201d]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">There, while scribbling in a notebook, I fell into conversation with a man who said that his mother had been a writer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">A real writer,\u201d said Dan Berlin, adding that she\u2019d passed away a few years earlier, in 2004.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">In Hollywood\u2014a closed yet curiously porous society described by Bukowski as cruel, corrupt, and stupid\u2014the coronation of someone as \u201ca real writer\u201d got my attention. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">She worked as a cleaning lady to raise me and my brothers,\u201d said Dan. \u201cAnd she just kept sending stuff out. Eventually she got published.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">I looked up Lucia Berlin, discovered was published by Black Sparrow Press as was Bukowski, and wrote a column about her for a small weekly newspaper in Providence, Rhode Island. And then moved on to <i>Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance<\/i> and lost Lucia in the dark and crowded stacks of a lifelong reader\u2019s mind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Now came the fusillade of praise for <i>A Manual for Cleaning Women<\/i>, an anthology of Berlin stories published in August by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. It was with happiness that I again tracked down Dan Berlin for a second conversation about his mother, at long last celebrated.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Dan said his mother \u201cfinally got a real publisher,\u201d and I asked him if she\u2019d died a bitter writer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Maybe, could be,\u201d he said. \u201cI think she had more guilt and shame over personal reasons than her professional career. A lot of our family history is in those stories. It\u2019s a little odd, brings up old memories.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"637\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28341\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg?resize=600%2C637\" alt=\"Lucia Berlin\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/lucia-berlin.jpg?resize=283%2C300&amp;ssl=1 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Her First Detox\u201d and \u201cTeenage Punk\u201d are especially difficult time warps for Dan, who works as a sound engineer on television shows. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><i>A Manual for Cleaning Women<\/i> is a candidate for the 2015 National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize and if it wins, the woman who paid for those stories with her life will not be here to accept, much less bask.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">When fame, money, and women finally found Bukowski near the end of his own life, he observed that \u201cit came too late.\u201d Old Hank\u2014who would have enjoyed bending an elbow with the dark and alluring Berlin\u2014had to be grateful that he was around to see any of it.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14544\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><i> <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The name kept coming to me near the end of the summer.
