But, like the campus and the town around it, there\u2019s no denying that The Grove seems to be changing beneath our very heels and loafers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">In recent years, as the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Ole Miss Football<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> culture has gained national exposure, tailgating in The Grove has grown into a process that goes far beyond simply showing up with your tent the morning of the game. With the first football game of the season fast approaching, rumors have been swirling that the university would make changes to its policies regarding tailgating in The Grove and enforce a stricter set of game day rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">This, according to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Athletics Director Ross Bjork<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, is only partially true.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27241\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-1.jpg?resize=600%2C401\" alt=\"grovechanges-1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-1.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-1.jpg?resize=300%2C201&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">There [are] a lot of things that have been in place before [and] just haven\u2019t really been publicized,\u201d said Bjork at a press conference Monday morning. \u201cOr enforced, quite frankly.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The most notable (and controversial) change is an adjustment of The Grove\u2019s opening and closure each weekend. Campus will open at 7:30pm on Friday before games, and will close either three hours after the game or at midnight, whichever comes earlier. Each Friday at 6:30, The Grove will be completely cleared of both people and their personal items until the official opening an hour later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">We\u2019ve had record crowds in the Grove the last three seasons, and so we need to give everyone the best experience possible,\u201d said Bjork. \u201cWe think this accomplishes that\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">[T]he other thing is, people don\u2019t have to wait and save a spot for two days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">While safety and crowd control seem to be at the forefront of the university\u2019s decision, not all tailgaters are exactly receptive to this perceived change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Take, for example, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Molly Beth Shaffer<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, a longtime Grove pro and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Pride of the South<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> alum who, in her own words, \u201chas Groving down to a science.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She spends entire weeks preparing unique food and beverage spreads for each game. She sets up four tents in her allotment, a spot near Ventress where the band performs pregame. She calls herself fortunate to have a job that previously allowed her to work from The Grove on Fridays while she was holding down her space. In a way, Groving is Shaffer\u2019s second job, and she\u2019s not entirely on board with the new workplace policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The old system essentially had two \u201cruns,\u201d one at 9am on Fridays to seek out and occupy tent spots (when Shaffer claims <span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"1094\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27244 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-2.jpg?resize=600%2C1094\" alt=\"grovechanges-2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-2.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-2.jpg?resize=165%2C300&amp;ssl=1 165w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-2.jpg?resize=562%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span>\u201cthere were never a ton of people out anyway\u201d), then another run at 9pm to actually set up tents. This sought to discourage spot-claimers from camping out as early as Thursday night. Now, the two runs are essentially combined into one run at 7:30pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">I\u2019m not that concerned about getting the spots,\u201d she explains. \u201cI am concerned that there will be some fights.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">There\u2019s a difference between excitement and being riled up negatively, and I don\u2019t think there\u2019s enough time to diffuse that more aggressive side in one hour\u2026 [I]\u2019m not sure we have the police force to cover it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">However, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Michael Thompson<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Senior Associate Athletics Director for Communications and Marketing<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, expects the exact opposite response from the new policy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">When you stand in a piece of plotted grass for eleven hours without leaving, you become pretty tied to that space,\u201d says Thompson. \u201cWe felt like, at 7:30, you\u2019re going to be less likely to bully and defend your space if you\u2019ve only been standing there for five or ten minutes.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">While the run will occur at the stroke of 7:30, Thompson explains that there is no tailgating equipment allowed on campus until that very minute, meaning that gear will have to be unloaded\u2014after the spot-claiming\u2014from a vehicle queue on University Avenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There is, however, one big exception to this rule: University-approved tailgating vendor services, which, according to Thompson, make up some 60% of Grove setups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">It\u2019s something that, ten years ago, was relatively unsophisticated,\u201d Thompson says. \u201cThere was never really any acknowledgement that these people were operating like they were.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">There was no program in place where we could enforce anything.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">That all changed with last year\u2019s game against <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Alabama<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, which was highlighted by a visit from ESPN\u2019s popular pregame show <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i>College GameDay<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">. In the days leading up to the game, the university sowed the seeds for the current vendor policy by inviting some of the independent vendors to work together in planning for Friday\u2019s mad dash.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">It was unbelievable the collaboration that happened in that room,\u201d says Thompson. \u201cOverall, it really showed me that we can work with these vendors and we should do it in a more formal way.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This led to the creation of a \u201cformalized, approved game day vendor program\u201d that works with these businesses to ensure that everything runs smoothly during Friday\u2019s setup. The program currently has over thirty approved tailgating businesses on board, each of which is required to attend two planning meetings per week to talk about the previous game\u2019s issues and to prepare for the next game. This way, Thompson estimates that the university is able to formally communicate with \u201c60-65% of The Grove right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">These approved vendors have to follow a much stricter set of guidelines and rules than a normal customer,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a minuscule amount of money that they\u2019re paying to be part of this program\u2014which is optional, by the way.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Official university policies aside, Shaffer says she has noticed a disturbing trend in Grove culture in recent years regarding <span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"473\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27246\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-3.jpg?resize=600%2C473\" alt=\"grovechanges-3\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-3.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-3.jpg?resize=300%2C237&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span>the practice of turning The Grove rush into a competition for business. Many individuals who cannot physically be present to claim a tent space will call on these vendors. This, she claims, makes Groving even more of an ordeal for locals who cannot afford such a service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">I\u2019ve been sitting in the grove for 12 hours every Friday for years,\u201d says Shaffer. \u201c[I] now have to hire at least two people to run to the spot to just hold it, and then two people to come help me haul.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Shaffer opposes \u201ctaking care of the system [by] monetary means,\u201d a process that she claims ensures \u201cthe person willing to pay the most gets the spot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">If they can\u2019t figure out how to work this out,\u201d Shaffer warns, \u201call of us who do all of the work, save our own spots, cook our own food\u2026 [w]ill be basically forcibly kicked out, and that scares me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Money\u2019s kind of the only factor that\u2019s not subjective.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">A couple of other policies (listed in full at <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">olemissfb.com\/the-grove<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">) have been met with hostility. However, according to Thompson, this hostility may stem from a misunderstanding of the rules\u2019 intent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">For one, the website lists a prohibition of \u201camplified sound.\u201d In reality, the aim is to cut back on volume levels (including bands and professional DJs) and lyrical content that is less than family-friendly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">We wanted to make it clear that it<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">s not about having a Bose iPod dock or listening to your TV with a game on,\u201d he explains. The rule is in place \u201cto give UPD something as backup\u2026 [I]f we get complaints, we have an option.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Another misleading rule is a tent size limit of 12&#215;20 ft. One tailgater may in fact occupy a space bigger than 12&#215;20, but must use multiple tents. Tents may not be staked down to the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In regard to the shutting down of The Grove post-game, Shaffer claims that these posted rules are also misleading and that there is some leeway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-4.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"1117\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-27252\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-4.jpg?resize=600%2C1117\" alt=\"grovechanges-4\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-4.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-4.jpg?resize=161%2C300&amp;ssl=1 161w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/grovechanges-4.jpg?resize=550%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">From what I understand, they<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">re trying to prevent major partying from happening,\u201d she says. When she inquired about a picnic-style dinner in the hours following the early UT-Martin game, for example, she was ensured that such activities \u201cwould not be a problem.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Overall, Thompson encourages a healthy dose of perspective in dealing with the changes in The Grove this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">We have the greatest tailgating venue in the world,\u201d he argues. \u201cThat\u2019s not hyberbole, that\u2019s legit. People from all over the world come here.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">There isn\u2019t a bad space in The Grove or the circle. Not a single one. I just hope that people will remember just how special what we have is.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Ross Bjork emphasized Monday that the new policies \u201creally [alleviate] a lot of things that, logistically, have become challenges for our campus, for our cleaning crew, our landscape crew, and then, really, for the fans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">This is a university-wide decision, it\u2019s not just Athletics,\u201d he stressed. \u201c[W]e\u2019ve come together to what we think is a great game day atmosphere already, and we need to enhance it and we\u2019ll evaluate how it works Friday and Saturday.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 The Grove is a place that, for many, is synonymous with tradition.
