It\u2019s also enjoying a high level of expansion and growth. Occasionally, in a town so compact, something has to give.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Rafters<\/b>, one of the newer bar\/restaurants on the Square, is managing to start something new while preserving some of the history that makes its location unique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"482\" class=\" size-full wp-image-25918 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-2.jpg?resize=600%2C482\" alt=\"rafters-2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-2.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-2.jpg?resize=300%2C241&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Located directly above <b>The Corner<\/b> <b>Bar<\/b> (with which it shares an owner in <b>Hudson Chadwick<\/b>), Rafters is something of an alternative to the cluster of bars directly beneath it. Offering live music, a New Orleans-inspired menu, and an architectural focus on the open air, it is already enjoying a good deal of business with all signs pointing up with the approach of football season. Upon walking inside, you\u2019d hardly recognize it as the same building that recently housed apartments and offices &#8211; let alone one of Oxford\u2019s oldest and most historic hotels. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-5.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"701\" class=\" size-full wp-image-25916 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-1.jpg?resize=600%2C701\" alt=\"rafters-1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-1.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-1.jpg?resize=257%2C300&amp;ssl=1 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to Chadwick, however, preserving the history was a major part of the renovation process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really cool place upstairs. I knew I wanted to do something with it,\u201d said Chadwick. \u201cWe climbed up in the attic and saw the original wood of the roof structure. [We] kinda knew we wanted to open it up.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Back before the <b>Henry Hotel<\/b> opened its doors in the 1920s, the site housed a Methodist church. The church burned, however, and relocated right around the corner to its current location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Chadwick explains that the Henry\u2019s original construction methods made the renovation process particularly difficult: \u201cEverything except that roof structure is built from concrete. They had to build everything by hand in the \u201820s. It was a feat of engineering, really. Concrete and brick.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Each of the hotel\u2019s thirty rooms had concrete walls &#8211; even the walls to the individual bathrooms were concrete. \u201cThe biggest challenge that we had was, how do you get 180 tons of concrete off of a second story building without destroying it? It\u2019s not like you can bring in heavy equipment to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt was literally just people with sledgehammers, beating down concrete walls, and then haul[ing] it off,\u201d Chadwick says. \u201cStraight manual labor, done the old-fashioned way.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"778\" class=\" size-full wp-image-25919 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-3.jpg?resize=600%2C778\" alt=\"rafters-3\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-3.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-3.jpg?resize=231%2C300&amp;ssl=1 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">All that hard work eventually paid off, however, and this evidence of the building\u2019s past life has lent the space a unique flair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe added the steel work, but as far as all that wood goes, that\u2019s all original\u2026 [O]nce we took down all the interior walls, took down the ceiling, and exposed the wood, we really had a new shell of a building to work with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This only accounts for one floor of the building, however. The downstairs portion of the building has a good bit of history to it, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe Corner was originally photography studio,\u201d says Chadwick. \u201cThat was Cofield\u2019s. That was where William Faulkner used to get his pictures taken. Basically the setup was: hotel on the second floor, retail on the first floor. There were three individual storefronts (that now make up The Corner) downstairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Eventually, both the Henry and the adjacent businesses were closed and replaced with bars and, for a short while, apartments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">However, <i>The Local Voice<\/i> publisher, <b>Newt Rayburn<\/b>, remembers the building from yet another chapter in its history, as the office of<br \/>\n<i>The Oxford American<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-4.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"636\" class=\" size-full wp-image-25920 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-4.jpg?resize=600%2C636\" alt=\"rafters-4\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-4.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rafters-4.jpg?resize=283%2C300&amp;ssl=1 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i>The Oxford American<\/i> was founded in 1992 and bought by John Grisham in 1995. Rayburn worked there as Art Director from 1995-1999. It won a <b>National Magazine Award<\/b> in 1999, solidifying its reputation on a national level. Today, it is known for (among other things) its annual <i>Southern Music Issue<\/i>, Rayburn\u2019s brainchild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAfter [Grisham] bought it, it became more of a national thing. He put a lot of money into it, and we worked night and day on that thing for years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rayburn explains that the building had, at that point, retained its hotel look. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe staircase went up into this little courtyard, and there was a fountain up there. If you went left, you\u2019d go where their stage is now, and that was the front of our office, our reception area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The magazine\u2019s different departments each had their own room, with the same dimensions as the original hotel layout. \u201c[The hall] had little rooms all along; here\u2019s the art director\u2019s room, here\u2019s the editor\u2019s room, it was really weird,\u201d Rayburn remembers. \u201cBut it worked for what we were doing. We were a quirky little magazine trying to make it in the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The magazine has since moved to <strong>Little Rock, Arkansas<\/strong>, but for Rayburn, the memories of the magazine\u2019s early days still linger in that space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cFor me, if I go to this part of Rafters, I\u2019m thinking, \u2018this is where my desk used to be.\u2019 It\u2019s kind of cool. I\u2019m glad that it\u2019s in use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Chadwick certainly has a few more uses in mind for Rafters than merely opening another bar to expand The Corner\u2019s footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe original plan when we did it was just to expand The Corner,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce we started getting into the process and looking at the different things we wanted to do\u2026 [w]e started talking about maybe differentiating it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat sealed the decision for me was my cousin, <b>Walker Dickens<\/b>. He called me, and wanted to be a part of it. He\u2019s been in the restaurant business down in Louisiana, and we really put the reins of the food side of things in his hands. We had a totally different food concept [from The Corner].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Chadwick also detailed his plans to liven up the space with live music as opposed to the DJs many bars choose to host. \u201cMost Thursday nights, we do country,\u201d he says. \u201cLots of up-and-coming artists are on the books.
