This album showcases Jimbo Mathus<\/strong><\/span>\u2019 Mississippi roots more than any of his other work I\u2019ve heard. I can\u2019t say it\u2019s more accomplished or masterful, because none of his work has ever seemed anything but awesome to me. When you purchase this album<\/span> at The End Of All Music<\/span>, you\u2019ll get a special code to download the album<\/span> in mp3 format.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"The title track is the first one you\u2019ll hear when you put Side A of this beautiful clear-blue vinyl album on your turntable. \u201cBlue Light\u201d has a country sound, but is still very Jimbo, which to me is a genre in itself. You\u2019ll feel like you\u2019re riding around with Jimbo and his driver, to whom he sings, \u201cI just saw the blue light flash in the back of my mind. Look here, driver, you know you\u2019re one toke over the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second track begins with the same haunting keys as \u201cHypmotized\u201d from Knockdown South<\/em> and resolves into a soul-stirring strain. I wouldn\u2019t have been surprised if the title had been \u201cSmall Town,\u201d but it\u2019s \u201cAin\u2019t Feelin\u2019 It.\u201d My favorite line is \u201cKeep my name out yo\u2019 mouth.\u201d It\u2019s a perfect Oxford song. I could listen to it on repeat for hours some days. Then \u201cHaunted John\u201d ends Side A on a rock n\u2019 roll note, with a bass riff that\u2019s still stuck in my head.<\/p>\n

\"\"Side B begins with another rockin\u2019 refrain, which has become my favorite Jimbo song, even though I\u2019ve only heard it twice: \u201cF**ked Up World\u201d (only he doesn\u2019t use asterisks in the title). It\u2019s hard to beat lyrics like \u201cI\u2019m tired of living in a f**ked up world. I wish The Man would get his shit together.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShackles and Chains,\u201d a sort-of love song, reminds me of Janis Joplin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cBall and Chain,\u201d all about the leashes of love. But much more Mississippi. Then Jimbo flips back to a more country sound for the final track, \u201cBurn the Honky Tonk.\u201d It\u2019s a honky-tonky heartbreak song that reminds me a lot of a Jimbo classic, \u201cSkateland Baby.\u201d A perfect end to an awesome record.<\/p>\n

On this album, Eric Carlton<\/strong> plays keys, Kell Kellum<\/strong> rocks the pedal steel, Ryan Rogers<\/strong> bangs on drums, and \u201cWhite Woman Killer\u201d is listed on background vocals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
