A veritable who\u2019s who of current Hill Country-influenced artists and offshoots of the genre\u2019s original masters, the Picnic seeks to recreate the laid-back feeling of past Sunday get-togethers held by the likes of <strong>R.L. Burnside<\/strong>, albeit on a larger scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Those who have been to the festival before (or have kept their finger on the pulse of the North Mississippi music scene over the past couple decades) will recognize many of this year\u2019s artists. Familiar names include <strong>North Mississippi Allstars<\/strong>, <strong>Garry Burnside<\/strong>, <strong>Eric Deaton<\/strong>, <strong>Jimbo Mathus<\/strong>, <strong>Cary Hudson<\/strong>, <strong>Rising Star Drum &amp; Fife Band<\/strong>, and numerous others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-KennyBrown.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"529\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25346\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-KennyBrown.jpg?resize=600%2C529\" alt=\"2015-picnic-KennyBrown\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-KennyBrown.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-KennyBrown.jpg?resize=300%2C265&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>According to <strong>Sara Brown<\/strong> (who runs the festival alongside her husband, Hill Country legend <strong>Kenny Brown<\/strong>), the Picnic\u2019s audience has expanded through the years, but still retains a neighborly feel. \u201cThere are people who have been every year, and they tell their friends,\u201d she explains. \u201cSo we have both repeat visitors and new people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The 2015 Picnic will kick off at 3 pm on Friday, June 26, and run until midnight on Saturday, June 27. However, the festivities really kick off on Thursday with guitar and harmonica workshops from some of North Mississippi\u2019s most respected musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-duwayne.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"740\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25351\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-duwayne.jpg?resize=600%2C740\" alt=\"2015-picnic-duwayne\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-duwayne.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-picnic-duwayne.jpg?resize=243%2C300&amp;ssl=1 243w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>The guitar workshop is being taught by Kenny Brown, <strong>DuWayne Burnside<\/strong>, <strong>Luther Dickinson<\/strong>, and <strong>Alvin Youngblood Hart<\/strong>. The harmonica workshop is being taught by <strong>Adam Gussow<\/strong>, <strong>John Nemeth<\/strong>, <strong>Jason Ricci<\/strong>, and <strong>Brandon Bailey<\/strong>. Tickets for the workshops are $100 per person and available on the picnic\u2019s website through June 19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cEach attendee will have approximately one hour with each instructor and share lunch together,\u201d says Brown. \u201cThere will be a jam after the workshop for all instructors and workshop attendees open to the public, starting at approximately 5 pm at David Kimbrough\u2019s Juke Joint in Holly Springs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NMSHCP_15_OLV_3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"591\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25360\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NMSHCP_15_OLV_3.jpg?resize=640%2C591\" alt=\"NMSHCP_15_OLV_3\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NMSHCP_15_OLV_3.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NMSHCP_15_OLV_3.jpg?resize=300%2C277&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>The gates will also open for on-site primitive camping at 5 pm on Thursday. For blues fans who might prefer electricity and running water, camping is also available at the nearby <strong>Wall Doxey State Park<\/strong>. \u201cThe Campground stage is really growing, so plan to come early on Friday,\u201d Brown advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There\u2019s a lot to enjoy at the Picnic aside from the music; an artist\u2019s village will be set up, featuring works from several local vendors. \u201cThe \u2018artist village\u2019 has really grown over the past few years,\u201d says Brown, \u201cso plan to spend some time there and take home that unique Hill Country souvenir.\u201d If you are interested in being a vendor at the 2015 Picnic, send an email to NMSpicnicvendorinfo@gmail.com for details. There will also be a raffle featuring several donated gifts for a good cause (last year\u2019s raffle funded headstones for some late members of the Burnside family).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And what\u2019s a picnic without food? <strong>Betty Davis BBQ<\/strong> returns this year as vendor\/host, and other staples such as fried catfish will be available. A multi-instrumentalist (in addition to guitar, he also plays banjo and mandolin), he has made steady festival appearances at home and abroad over the years. He has worked on the soundtracks for such films as <em>The Great Debaters<\/em> and <em>Black Snake Moan<\/em>. Though the influential <strong>Otha Turner<\/strong> passed away in 2003, his granddaughter, <strong>Sharde Thomas<\/strong>, carries on the drum-and-fife tradition with Rising Star. Hudson has been playing music since the 80s with legendary Oxford bands <strong>The Hilltops <\/strong>and <strong>Blue Mountain<\/strong>, as well as having an impressive solo career. He\u2019s played guitar for many greats, including <strong>Bobby Rush<\/strong>, <strong>R.L. His latest solo album, <em>Blue Healer<\/em>, was recorded in <strong>Water Valley<\/strong> at <strong>Dial Back Sound<\/strong> and released on the Fat Possum label. His output of late has featured producer <strong>Bruce Watson<\/strong> and engineer\/instrumentalist <strong>Bronson Tew<\/strong>. He has played with Luther Dickinson and Alvin Youngblood Hart in <strong>South Memphis String Band<\/strong>, described as an \u201cacoustic supergroup\u201d that will also be making an appearance at the Picnic. He can still be found playing solo shows locally (his show at <strong>Proud Larry\u2019s<\/strong> with <strong>His Dirty Crooks<\/strong> is coming up on June 18).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Duwayne Burnside <\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Friday, 11 pm<\/span><br \/>\nGarry Burnside <\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Saturday, 3:30 pm<\/span><br \/>\nDavid Kimbrough <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Friday, 10 pm<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A frequent performer with the North Mississippi Allstars, Duwayne is the son of R.L. Burnside. However, he has become a well-traveled performer in his own right, sharing the stage with such blues legends as <strong>B.B. King<\/strong> and <strong>Albert King<\/strong> during his stay in Memphis. His brother, <strong>Garry Burnside<\/strong>, will also be at the Picnic once again, performing with his own band. Both brothers continue to play regularly and carry on their father\u2019s influential music tradition. Born in 1955, he picked up music as a teenager, starting out as a drummer in the local fife-and-drum bands of <strong>Otha Turner<\/strong> and <strong>Napolian Strickland<\/strong>, and later with <strong>Jessie Mae Hemphill<\/strong> as heard on her classic \u201cFeelin\u2019 Good\u201d album. He is also a singer and guitarist, inspired by his neighbors <strong>R.L. They\u2019re a two-man band with a full-on sound: Gussow on harmonica and drumset, Gross on guitar, with both men sharing vocal duties. Adam Gussow needs no introduction to blues harmonica fans. He is \u201cone of the world\u2019s finest blues harmonica players\u201d according to Philadelphia blues DJ <strong>Jonny Meister<\/strong>. Alan Gross is best-known for his long association with Mississippi bluesman <strong>Terry \u201cHarmonica\u201d Bean<\/strong>\u2014he\u2019s played guitar in his band for a decade\u2014and work with hill country performers <strong>Kenny Kimbrough<\/strong>, <strong>Lightning Malcolm<\/strong>, and <strong>Eric Deaton<\/strong>. He\u2019s also gigged with R. L. Boyce, a mainstay of <strong>Otha Turner<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Rising Star Fife &amp; Drum<\/strong> ensemble, and played numerous festivals across the state of Mississippi.
