They crushed his windpipe, they broke his back \u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2013Robert Ross, bluesman <\/span><\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In Baltimore, the story often comes to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Like a large mob of teenagers rampaging through city streets as though the bulls of Pamplona were at their heels, kids busting out after the school bell to throw rocks at cops, set buildings on fire, loot liquor stores and, apparently, have the time of their highly-perishable lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The only thing chasing this Lost Generation (a new one is created here every year)\u2014at least until the National Guard rolled in\u2014was the ghost of Freddie Gray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThey chased his shadow down and pinned it to the ground,\u201d wrote slide guitarist Ross in a blues composed in the wake of the riots. \u201cRight into the van the shadow goes, how it died nobody knows \u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The still unexplained death of the 25-year-old Gray (acknowledged by officials to have occurred after his arrest for fleeing) ignited the worst civil disturbance in my hometown since the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Freddie had been picked up by the cops more than once on drug charges before his last ride in a police van. Which made him just about the same as tens of thousands of his peers in a historically and stubbornly segregated city of haves-and-have-nots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Wrote former Associated Press reporter Christopher Corbett in a dispatch for Reuters: \u201cHow and why he died under circumstances that are extremely confusing at the very least is a question that will be haunting Baltimore\u00a0for a long while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As haunting as the work of Edgar Allan Poe, buried here in the mid-19<sup>th<\/sup> century, just about the time Baltimore was earning its most enduring nickname: MOBTOWN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It\u2019s easy to call people who burn their own neighborhoods idiots, especially when the torched and looting buildings are not just liquor stores but pharmacies where people without easy transportation go for hard-to-get medicine and a still-under-construction \u201ctransformation\u201d center for housing and job training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SgtDalfonso.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-24542\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SgtDalfonso.jpg?resize=640%2C552\" alt=\"SgtDalfonso\" width=\"640\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SgtDalfonso.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SgtDalfonso.jpg?resize=300%2C259&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Some in this just-below-the-Mason-Dixon-line city with numerous monuments to the Confederacy are calling the rioters worse than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But how idiotic to be more pissed-off that one baseball game was cancelled and another played\u2014without precedent\u2014inside an empty stadium, as the Orioles did on April 29 than disgusted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Disgusted at a society able to produce hundreds of thousands of kids across this country both empty and stupid enough to burn the store where Grandma gets her insulin?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It can\u2019t happen here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"596\" class=\" size-full wp-image-24543 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg?resize=600%2C596\" alt=\"FatherMarvin180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg?resize=300%2C298&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg?resize=50%2C50&amp;ssl=1 50w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FatherMarvin180.jpg?resize=186%2C186&amp;ssl=1 186w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Today Baltimore, tomorrow \u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The most courageous observations in light of the riots (trouble which surely will flare again when the coroner\u2019s report is released) came not from a politician or a preacher but from a very rich man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">John Angelos is the son of Peter Angelos, the aging asbestos-injury attorney who grew up in the Greektown neighborhood (untouched by the riots) during the Depression. Peter Angelos is the owner of the Baltimore Orioles.
