Group and school tours are welcome Wednesday,\u00a0April 8, through Saturday, April 11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Visitors will be allowed a rare look into the lives of Holly Springs\u2019 slave population during the tour. The award-winning tour corrects the tradition of ignoring the humble structures behind the big houses, and the enslaved population who served to make that gracious living possible, and in fact happen at all&#8230;and at great human cost.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Tour of Slave Quarters<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Delve behind the hoop-skirts and mint juleps to the hard life behind the big house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The South has a rich and varied history. The storybook life seen on the silver screen is often just one side of our past. Behind the grand mansions, beyond the freshly pressed linens, lay small and intimate slave quarters where work, toil, and history also happened. Holly Springs is home to 20 slave quarters, and three of them will be on the 2015 tour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Another side of antebellum life will be seen through these surviving structures with a<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseJosephMcGill.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"471\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23954\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseJosephMcGill.jpg?resize=600%2C471\" alt=\"BehindBigHouseJosephMcGill\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseJosephMcGill.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseJosephMcGill.jpg?resize=300%2C236&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a> historic interpretation by <strong>Joseph McGill<\/strong> of the <strong>Slave Dwelling Project<\/strong> and formerly a field agent with the <strong>National Trust for Historic Preservation<\/strong>. McGill will spend a few nights in Holly Springs\u2019 slave quarters and then bring their story to life during the weekend-long event. McGill\u2019s mission is to help preserve the dwellings and educate the public. \u201cI want people to respect and restore these places, together, and not be afraid to tell their stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;font-size: 14pt\">New to the Tour:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Archaeological Digging<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Dr. Carolyn Friewald<\/strong>, Professor of Anthropology &amp; Archaeology at the University of Mississippi will conduct field studies of the domestic lives of slaves during the tour, particularly around the food preparation areas. The excavation will take place on the grounds of the Hugh Craft house to study the domestic lives and eating habits of the Craft family\u2019s slaves and, by association, the Crafts themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"> <strong>Culinary Interpretations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Michael Twitty<\/strong>, culinary historian and interpreter, studies antebellum cooking methods<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseMichaelTwitty.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"763\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23955\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseMichaelTwitty.jpg?resize=600%2C763\" alt=\"BehindBigHouseMichaelTwitty\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseMichaelTwitty.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/BehindBigHouseMichaelTwitty.jpg?resize=236%2C300&amp;ssl=1 236w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a> and ingredients in a given historical context to recreate the blending of African cooking traditions and what was native to the land. Twitty will discuss the cooks of antebellum kitchens and enslaved people\u2019s cabins for their unique role in giving the South her mother cuisine. Twitty will conduct food demonstrations throughout the tour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The education tour is offered free to the public, thanks to grant assistance from the <strong>Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong>, <strong>Mississippi Development Authority\/Tourism Division<\/strong>, and <strong>Holly Springs Tourism<\/strong>; and donations from Friends of Behind the Big House Tour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0The Behind the Big House Education Project is sponsored by <strong>Preserve Marshall County and Holly Springs<\/strong>.
