The Spring 2015 Percussion Concert<\/strong> will be a night filled with energetic music from around the world including Africa<\/strong>, Jamaica<\/strong>, Trinidad<\/strong>, and the United States<\/strong>. This is certainly a concert for the entire family!<\/span><\/p>\n

The World Percussion Ensemble<\/strong> will perform “Tiger’s Blood<\/strong>,” which has the\u00a0spirit\"0402-PercussionAndUMISSO\"<\/a> of a wild, driving, Taiko piece. Tiger Blood<\/em> is the animalistic alter-ego of Charlie Sheen<\/strong>, who\u00a0was all over the news\u00a0at the time\u00a0of this composition. The ensemble will also be performing “Denkyem<\/strong>,” which is the West African Adinkra symbol for the crocodile. The\u00a0ensemble will close with\u00a0\u00a0“The African Welcome Piece<\/strong>,” which\u00a0was composed to capture the energy and spirit which exists in African communities. The multi-lineal mode of drumming, which often accompanies dances, polyrhythmic structure, and cross rhythms are used to create this African musical style.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Steel Drum Band<\/strong> (UMISSO<\/strong>) will perform popular tunes from Harry Belafonte<\/strong>, John Williams<\/strong>, Bobby McFerrin<\/strong>, and\u00a0Boogie Sharpe<\/strong>. The\u00a0band will be performing the Panorama<\/strong> classic “Birthday Party<\/strong>.”\u00a0This version\u00a0took\u00a0second place for Phase II Groove at the Panorama Competition in Trinidad. It has an exciting use of Soca\/Calypso rhythms, chromatic passages, and lush harmonies. The band will also be performing “Cantina Band<\/strong>.”\u00a0Figrin D’an<\/strong> and the Modal Nodes<\/strong>\u00a0(also known as the\u00a0Cantina\u00a0Band) is a fictional band from\u00a0George Lucas<\/strong>‘s\u00a0science-fiction\u00a0saga\u00a0Star Wars<\/strong>. The group first appeared in the film\u00a0Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope\u00a0(1977) and was depicted as hairless\u00a0aliens\u00a0with dome-shaped heads and round, black eyes and belonged to a race called\u00a0Biths.<\/span><\/p>\n
