The Symposium has featured such keynote speakers as <strong>Paul Oliver<\/strong>, <strong>Samuel Charters<\/strong>, and <strong>Bill Ferris<\/strong> as well as intimate musical performances by <strong>Honeyboy Edwards<\/strong>, <strong>Little Milton<\/strong>, and <strong>B.B. King<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The 2015 Blues Today Symposium will be Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the University of Mississippi. The program\u2019s theme, \u201cNorth Mississippi Hill Country Blues,\u201d will focus on the region\u2019s distinctive blues sound and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>David Evans<\/strong>, director of the ethnomusicology\/regional studies doctoral program of the <strong>Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Memphis<\/strong>, will deliver the keynote address. Evans is a specialist in American folk and popular music, particularly blues, spirituals, gospel, and African American folk music. He is the author of <strong>Tommy Johnson<\/strong> (1971), <strong>Big Road Blues: Tradition and Creativity in the Folk Blues<\/strong> (1982) and <strong>The NPR Curious Listener\u2019s Guide to the Blues<\/strong> (2005). Evans has also produced more than 30 albums and CDs of field and studio recordings of music for the University of Memphis\u2019s <strong>High Water Records<\/strong>. In 2003 he won a Grammy Award for \u201cBest Album Notes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>George W. K. Dor<\/strong>, holder of the McDonnell-Barksdale Chair of Ethnomusicology and associate professor of music at the University of Mississippi, will lead a discussion on drums in the North Mississippi region. The <strong>University Press of Mississippi<\/strong> published Dor\u2019s most recent book, <strong><em>West African Drumming and Dance in North American Universities: An Ethnomusicological Perspective<\/em><\/strong>, in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Additionally, filmmakers <strong>Joe York<\/strong> and <strong>Scott Barretta<\/strong> will preview portions of their upcoming documentary feature film on <strong>Como, Mississippi<\/strong>\u2019s legendary blues artist <strong>Fred McDowell<\/strong>. The duo will also discuss the process of documentary filmmaking. Earlier, <strong>Greg Johnson<\/strong>, curator for the <strong>Blues Archive<\/strong> in the D<strong>epartment of Archives and Special Collections<\/strong> at the University of Mississippi, will highlight holdings in the archive, featuring numerous North Mississippi blues musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The symposium coincides with <strong>Clarksdale, Mississippi<\/strong>\u2019s annual <strong>Juke Joint Festival<\/strong> (April 10\u00ad\u201312) providing attendees an opportunity to see and hear dozens of musicians from the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Sponsored by: <em>Living Blues<\/em> Magazine and the <strong>Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">All presentations except for <em><strong>Thacker Mountain Radio<\/strong> <\/em>will occur in the <strong>Faulkner Room<\/strong> of the\u00a0Department of Archives and Special Collections on the third floor of the <strong>J.
