This time, <strong>Lamar Lounge<\/strong> will host chefs <strong>John Currence<\/strong> and <strong>Sean Brock<\/strong> with a Mexican themed event called \u201cBig Bad Minero.\u201d The title is a mashup of Currence\u2019s \u201cBig Bad\u201d motif and Brock\u2019s newest restaurant, <strong>Minero<\/strong>, a casual Mexican eatery which opened in Charleston in October of 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Pop-Up will benefit <strong>Oxford City Market<\/strong>\u2019s SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card system that will debut this Spring along with the new \u201cDouble-Up Bucks\u201d program. <strong>Market Director Betsy Chapman<\/strong> describes the program as a way to incentivize making healthier food choices when the cost of junk food is much lower. Many people aren\u2019t aware that Oxford has two USDA-declared food deserts, with 33% of the population living below poverty, and 50% of children receiving free lunch in the school system. Chapman said that one of the Market\u2019s primary missions is to work to address <em>food insecurity<\/em> \u2013 \u201climited access to healthy, high-quality food that is also affordable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/oxcmlogo-620x327.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"327\" class=\" size-full wp-image-23695 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/oxcmlogo-620x327.jpg?resize=620%2C327\" alt=\"oxcmlogo-620x327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/oxcmlogo-620x327.jpg?resize=620%2C327&amp;ssl=1 620w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/oxcmlogo-620x327.jpg?resize=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c[With] the EBT system in place, the next step is for the market to acknowledge the higher cost of eating healthy,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cSo we want to make it easier for people to access healthy local food. We\u2019re doing that by offering Double-Up Bucks. If a SNAP customer comes and spends $10 at the market, the Double-Up Bucks fund will provide a $10 match, so it\u2019s a dollar-for-dollar match to increase the customer\u2019s food-buying power for the week. In essence, it\u2019s great for the customers because they get more bang for their buck, and it\u2019s great for vendors because they\u2019re making more money on their stuff. So it\u2019s mutually beneficial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Market\u2019s season will start in April (tentative opening date is April 21st) and will continue throughout the summer every Tuesday from 3 \u2013 6:30 pm on West Oxford Loop. They have plenty of exciting programs planned for this season, so stay tuned for more information on upcoming Market events. With the new EBT system in place, folks who have the cards will be able to shop there and use it just like at the supermarket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Chef John Currence is very excited about the event and the cause. \u201cI couldn\u2019t be more proud to be involved and part of helping the market,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is something that the community desperately needs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0The Pop-Up will begin at 5 pm, and there will be no reservations taken. All seating (including the bar) will be managed by a hostess on a first-come first-served basis. The upstairs patio area will open as a waiting area, serving Mexican beers and a special cocktail that Currence promises is a must-try.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0The El Sat\u00e1nico is a \u201ctotally weird,\u201d concoction of <em>tepache<\/em> (fermented pineapple wine), pineapple vinegar, and white tequila. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy,\u201d said Currence, \u201cand it\u2019s so delicious. And weird.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0Other features of the menu include Lamb Neck Posole, Smoked Brisket Enchiladas, and Smoked Pork Tostada \u2013 all spotlighting Lamar Lounge\u2019s signature pit-smoked meats.
