Is Memphis<\/strong> the westernmost city in Tennessee<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Or, with all respect to the suburb of Southaven<\/strong>, is Bluff City<\/strong> the northernmost town in Mississippi<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n

In March of 2009, I set a Memphis rendezvous with the woman who was my sweetheart at the time; now, as bluesmen like T-Bone Walker<\/strong> have sung, \u201cmy-old-time-used-to-be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Just before my plane took off from Tinseltown<\/strong>, Evangeline called to say that her mother\"memphis-map\"<\/a> had died. I spent the weekend alone, walking the streets of Memphis, talking to strangers for a travel story commissioned by a German magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n

And met a man named Joe Yates<\/strong> (then 72) at a downtown sandwich shop (now closed) named for his murdered son, Napoleon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Claiming to have known both the young Elvis<\/strong> and Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/strong>, Yates daily made the 35 mile drive south on I-55 to his birthplace in Coldwater<\/strong>, just north of Senatobia<\/strong>. He went to visit his mother, Clora.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI go down there every night to look in on her,\u201d said Yates, still living in Memphis. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to put her in a home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
