The Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies<\/strong> is bringing Writer-Director-Photographer and American cultural icon John Waters<\/strong> to the University of Mississippi<\/strong> for his one-man show entitled \u201cThis Filthy World<\/strong>,\u201d which will be at the Gertrude Stein Ford Center<\/strong> on Saturday, March 28th at 7:00 p.m. This event is free. Tickets are available through the UM Box Office<\/strong>. This student-inspired event was made possible by generous support from the University Lecture Series<\/strong>, numerous university entities, and private donations.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Waters has directed over a dozen movies. He has penned numerous nonfiction \"John_Waters003\"<\/a>books. His latest, Car Sick<\/em><\/strong>, was on the 2014 New York Times<\/em> bestseller list. He is also a noted photographer whose work has appeared in galleries all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waters is an artist with the amazing ability to make his audiences laugh, squirm, and scream in one delirious, delicious moment. His cult classic films such as Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Polyester<\/em> and larger big budget productions like Serial Mom, Cry Baby, Hairspray <\/em>and Cecil B. Demented<\/em> are carnivalesque journeys into American cultural and social life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dennis Lim<\/strong>, the Film Society<\/strong>‘s Director of Programming at Lincoln Center<\/strong>, says it best when he observes that John Waters is “a lifelong provocateur and by now a national treasure. [He] is a singular, even prophetic figure within not only American cinema but also the broader landscape of American popular culture. From his early underground sensations to his subversive work within the mainstream, no filmmaker has done as much to blur and challenge the distinctions between high and low culture, and between good and bad taste.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In September, 2014, Film Society of Lincoln Center honored John Waters\u2019 fifty years in filmmaking with a 10-day celebration entitled \u201cFifty Years of John Waters: How Much Can You Take\u201d featuring a complete retrospective of his film work.\u00a0\"The<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
