We were unable to observe Black History Month<\/strong> during the month of February due to the icy weather. The\u00a0University of Mississippi Department of Music<\/strong>\u00a0has rescheduled it’s performance of the Black History Month Concert<\/strong> for this Thursday. The UM Concert Band<\/strong>, Steel Drum Orchestra<\/strong>, and the World Percussion Ensemble<\/strong> will not be able to perform at this event, due to scheduling conflicts, but they will perform some of their scheduled pieces during their respective spring concerts.<\/span><\/p>\n

This annual series of Black History Month concerts was started in 2004 by associate professor George Dor<\/strong>. Black History Month is intended to celebrate African-Americans and other people of African descent. A way of honoring the preceding is to acknowledge their significant contributions to different spheres of our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

The repertoire of the concert features works of black composers, genres created and\"Black<\/a> developed by African-Americans, Africans and Caribbean people, and arrangements in the stylistic veins of African-American and African music traditions by musicians\/composers of any cultural background.\u00a0Ghanaian dances and compositions by William Grant Still<\/strong>, Michael Ndow<\/strong>, John Rosamond Johnson<\/strong>, Daniel Kelley<\/strong>, Mary Lou Williams<\/strong> and Oliver Nelson<\/strong> will be performed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Featured ensembles include the\u00a0Ole Miss African Drum and Dance Ensemble<\/strong>, directed by Dor; and the Mississippians Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>, directed by Michael Worthy<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Music student soloists are George Money<\/strong>, vibraphone; Christopher Scott<\/strong>, saxophone; Kashaun Wortham<\/strong>, violoncello; Brandon Collins<\/strong>, clarinet; and Jasmaine Wilbert<\/strong>, lead voice.<\/span><\/p>\n

A UM wind quintet<\/strong> also is scheduled to perform. Members include Donnie McGee<\/strong>, flute; Pamela Ponce<\/strong>, oboe; Kim Cassisa<\/strong>, clarinet; Traces Brooks<\/strong>, horn; and Madison Lorenzo<\/strong>, bassoon. Accompanists are Gordon Jason<\/strong> and Stacy Rodgers<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This year’s concert features mainly instrumental ensembles and music,” Dor said. “Next year’s will return to emphasis on vocal genres. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/strong> said, ‘Diversity is … a beautiful symphony of humanity.’ I consider all of us as members of that symphony.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Music has partnered with the Gertrude C. Ford Center<\/strong>, the Office of the Chancellor<\/strong>, the Office of the Provost<\/strong>, the Center for Inclusion and Cross-Cultural Engagement<\/strong>, and the Inn at Ole Miss<\/strong> to make this event a success.\u00a0\"The<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
