\"TheHeardBrian\"<\/a>\"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a><\/strong>Have you ever heard a Heavy Metal band with only two members? Probably not, and even if you have, I\u2019m certain they didn\u2019t rock nearly as hard or sound anywhere close as good as Oxford, Mississippi\u2019s Drum & Bass favorites, The Heard. <\/strong>Featuring Drummer and Vocalist Jace Hughes<\/strong> and Bassist Brian Hatch<\/strong>, The Heard have been making waves locally for the last year. They have a newly released EP available at shows, and the video for their song \u201cInside Your Head,\u201d was recently voted Oxford\u2019s \u201cFavorite Music Video<\/strong>.\u201d Recorded live at Proud Larrys\u2019 <\/strong>on The Square last August, \u201cInside Your Head\u201d is a rocknroll trip worthy of The Heard, Proud Larrys\u2019 and Director Newt Rayburn<\/strong>. The video will be featured at the 12th Annual Oxford Film Festival<\/strong> at 4 pm<\/strong> on February 28, 2015<\/strong> at Malco Cinema Theater.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a>Oxford, Mississippi<\/strong> Hip Hop band Fadetoblaq<\/strong> has a new member, Chealsea Williams-Simpson<\/strong>, a.k.a. Lovely Tygress<\/strong>. And by calling them a \u201cband,\u201d we mean they are a band in the truest sense, and not just a rap group. Featuring Vocalist and Lyricist Demetrios Brown<\/strong>, this Oxford ensemble kicks ass! Drummer Zechariah Tillotson<\/strong>, Guitarist Kent Poss<\/strong>, Saxophonist Charles Washington<\/strong>, and Keyboardist Bill Perry Jr. <\/strong>have been a staple of Oxford\u2019s music scene for a few years now. Shows are March 5<\/strong>th at Ajax<\/strong> Diner<\/strong> and March 21<\/strong>st at The Blind Pig<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a>S\"BillPerryTrio_0209-1\"<\/a>peaking of keyboardist Bill Perry Jr., The Bill Perry Project<\/strong> appeared on \u201cLocal Memphis Live<\/strong>\u201d (ABC Memphis) on February 9th, and again on \u201cLive at 9<\/strong>\u201d (CBS Memphis) on February 18th. Bill\u2019s jazz trio also features bass badass Keith \u201cDoc Prana\u201d<\/strong> Fondren<\/strong> and drummer Joe Eagle<\/strong>. \"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a>H\"KennyMac\"<\/a>e might be relatively unknown to most of us around these parts, but guitarist Kenny Mac<\/strong> hails from Tupelo<\/strong> and the Mississippi Delta<\/strong> area, but now he calls Oxford<\/strong> home. Kenny Mac\u2019s Mother\u2019s cousin is Conway Twitty<\/strong> and both artists can trace their musical roots back to Kenny Mac\u2019s Grandmother, Annie Pruitt<\/strong>, who taught the boys how to play guitar. After many years as a studio musician, Kenny Mac is finally going the solo route. He has signed a record distribution agreement with California-based 1 Voice Records<\/strong>, a division of EuroStates Music<\/strong>..<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a>\"PopStaples\"<\/a>An album of previously unreleased songs by the late Roebuck \u201cPops\u201d Staples<\/strong> was released on February 17. Titled Don\u2019t Lose This<\/em>, the record features ten songs originally recorded in 1999 by the Winona, Mississippi<\/strong>-born gospel staple before his passing the next year. It includes new vocals by Pops\u2019 daughter Mavis Staples<\/strong> and a bassline by Jeff Tweedy <\/strong>(Tweedy previously produced two of Mavis\u2019 albums and the former Staple Singer<\/strong> recruited him to help get the record out); Tweedy\u2019s 18-year-old son Spencer<\/strong> drums on the record, too. This record is the March selection for The End Of All Music<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cRecord of the Month Club.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a>\"JohnnyValiant-TheFosters\"<\/a>Oxford Punk Band The<\/strong> Unwed Teenage Mothers <\/strong>were featured on the ABC Family TV show The Fosters<\/em> on Monday, February 16. The band had the super tough task of playing themselves rocking out at a warehouse \u201cPharm Party,\u201d and they certainly did a knock out, bang up job. There were some great close-ups on bassist Johnny Valiant<\/strong> and his killer mustache, and lots and lots of hair from guitarist Colin Sneed<\/strong> and Landon Boyte<\/strong>. Unfortunately for Oxford\u2019s music scene, it looks like the band is preparing to move to North Carolina, to join front man Colin Sneed who moved out there last year. Johnny Valiant says he\u2019s shooting to move around June, with Landon drummer Shane Prewitt<\/strong> to head up there later in the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HeartMusicNoteICON_localmusicnotes_40h\"<\/a>L\"2015-02-16-TylerKeith-TinyAbandonedDeskConcert\"<\/a>ocal Songwriter and Guitarist Tyler Keith<\/strong> has released his own version of National Public Radio<\/strong>\u2019s Tiny Desk Concert<\/em>. NPR\u2019s hit internet show has featured such performers as Trey Anastasio<\/strong>, Lucinda Williams<\/strong>, and Cat Stevens<\/strong>. The Ole Miss rocker, who\u2019s infamous in the Mid-South for his bands The Neckbones<\/strong>, The Preacher\u2019s Kids<\/strong>, and The Apostles<\/strong>, has put his own unique spin on the concept, calling it the \u201cTiny Abandoned Desk Concert.\u201d The 18-minute long film was shot in the backwoods of Lafayette County<\/strong>, Mississippi by photographer Mike Stanton<\/strong> at an abandoned shack with plenty of junk around it. Keith flips an old wooden desk over at the beginning of the film and proceeds to play on top of it, performing five of his hit tunes, including \u201cKid Twist,\u201d \u201cDo It For Johnny,\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Look On My Darkside.\u201d Dogs barking and cars passing nearby are the icing on the cake for this Mississippi rocknroll gem of a film.<\/span><\/p>\n
