Black History Month Concert<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the University of Mississippi<\/strong>‘s observance of Black History Month<\/strong>, the\u00a0Department of Music\u00a0<\/strong>presents its annual concert Feb. 26.\u00a0The Black History Month concert, held every February, is led by the Ole Miss African Drum and Dance Ensemble<\/strong> and features a variety of musical ensembles and guest performers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The repertoire features Ghanaian dances and compositions by William Grant Still<\/strong>, \"MusicDept_1\"<\/a>Ayatey Shabazz<\/strong>, William Owens<\/strong>, Michael Ndow<\/strong>, Robert Sheldon<\/strong>, Len ‘Boogie’ Sharpe<\/strong>, Rafael De Leon<\/strong>, et al, John Rosamond Johnson<\/strong>, Daniel Kelley<\/strong>, Mary Lou Williams<\/strong>, and Oliver Nelson<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Featured ensembles include the Ole Miss African Drum and Dance Ensemble, directed by George Dor<\/strong>; the UM Steel Orchestra and World Percussion Ensemble<\/strong>, directed by Ricky Burkhead<\/strong>; the Mississippians Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>, directed by Michael Worthy<\/strong>; and the UM Concert Band<\/strong>, directed by Randy Dale<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Guest artists scheduled are Johnny Lane<\/strong>, renowned percussionist and UM professor emeritus; Samuel K. Elikem Nyamuame<\/strong>, co-director of Binghamton University’s African Music and Dance Ensemble; and Damein Wash<\/strong>, vocalist and UM alumnus. Music student soloists are George Money<\/strong>, vibraphone; Christopher Scott<\/strong>, saxophone; Kashaun Wortham<\/strong>, violoncello; Brandon Collins<\/strong>, clarinet; and Jasmaine Wilbert<\/strong>, lead voice.<\/span><\/p>\n

A UM student wind quintet will also perform. Members include: Donnie McGee<\/strong>, flute; Pamela Ponce<\/strong>, oboe; Kim Cassisa<\/strong>, clarinet; Traces Brooks<\/strong>, horn; and Madison Lorenzo<\/strong>, bassoon. Collaborative pianists are Gordon Jason<\/strong> and Stacy Rodgers<\/strong>.\u00a0\"The<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
