All thirteen songs are his and many of them reflect a direct connection with artists like the early <strong>Dylan<\/strong>, <strong>Jerry Lee Lewis<\/strong>, the <strong>Bobby Fuller 4<\/strong>, and <strong>Jimmie Rodgers<\/strong>, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/TylerKeith_AliasKidTwist_print.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20648\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/TylerKeith_AliasKidTwist_print.jpg?resize=600%2C490\" alt=\"TylerKeith_AliasKidTwist_print\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/TylerKeith_AliasKidTwist_print.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/TylerKeith_AliasKidTwist_print.jpg?resize=300%2C245&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>But let me be quick to point out there are no misplaced sentimental lyrics about mules and cotton wagons here. While the songs\u2019 musical roots may reach down into the past, their narrative expression is here and now. The song \u201cKid Twist\u201d is so malevolent it makes <strong>Kurt Weill<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cMack the Knife\u201d sound like a nursery rhyme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At the core of these songs there is a powerful sense of a conflict giving rise to the music and lyrics. The kind of conflict that has to do with a songwriter who is a rebel at heart and is trying to reconcile this inner self with the world\u2014without winding up at Parchman. As Emerson once wrote, \u201cSociety everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20650\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tyler.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20650 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tyler.jpg?resize=639%2C800\" alt=\"Tyler\" width=\"639\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tyler.jpg?w=639&amp;ssl=1 639w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tyler.jpg?resize=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tyler Keith performing at Thacker Mountain Radio on October 2, 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As we all know, assuming the role of an artist in our society exacts its costs. Our economic structure severely penalizes those who don\u2019t become cogs in its oligarchical system that functions primarily to benefit big business, corporations, the Republican Party, Wall Street, and the Pentagon: the same people who would nail Jesus Christ to the cross a second time if given the chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The rebel as artist doesn\u2019t have it in them to accede to this vaunted white-collar hierarchy reserved largely (but not exclusively) for those with a sense of entitlement. The sociologist <strong>C. Wright Mills<\/strong> has written of this stratum of our society: \u201cThe white-collar people slipped quietly into modern society. Whatever history they have had is a history without events; whatever common interests they have do not lead to unity; whatever future they have will not be of their own making.\u201d By contrast, an artist knows full well he or she has created their own fate along with their art and accepts that fate with the unflinching stoicism of a frontline Spartan soldier. is\u2014for an older, truer American music and therefore an older, mythical American time, as evidenced in <em>Alias Kid Twist<\/em>, harkens back to <strong>Woody Guthrie<\/strong>\u2019s old blue-collar dream of America\u2014to his prayerful songs and prose that gave voice to a brand of American individualism personified by underdogs and outcasts, characters that live in the songs of Tyler Keith.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\"
