\"Cook-Poster-proof4\"<\/a>You are invited to attend a lecture by Robert Cook<\/strong> (University of Sussex<\/strong>) entitled \u201cPageant Without Parallel: The Funeral of Jefferson Davis and the Problem of Sectional Reconciliation after the Civil War.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The talk will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2014<\/strong> at 6 pm<\/strong> in the Overby Center Auditorium<\/strong> (555 Grove Loop). The event is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Cook is Professor of American History at the University of Sussex. Cook is primarily a scholar of the Civil War Era, but his work analyzes the relationships between race, politics, and society in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. <\/span><\/p>\n

He has published on topics ranging from the evolution of the Republican Party<\/strong> in Iowa<\/strong> from 1838-78 and the Secession Winter<\/strong> of 1860-61 to the American Civil War Centennial<\/strong> and the African-American Struggle<\/strong> for civil rights in the twentieth century. <\/span><\/p>\n

His most recent book, Civil War Senator<\/em>, provides a biography of influential Republican Senator William Pitt Fessenden<\/strong>. He is currently working on a comprehensive history of American Civil War memory that spans the time period from Appomattox<\/strong> to the Civil War Sesquicentennial.<\/span><\/p>\n
