Hometown:<\/strong> Forest, Mississippi<\/span><\/p>\n

Early music experience:<\/strong> I started out in the middle school band on trumpet, then quickly switched to drums after hearing my neighbor practicing on his kit. I would ride my bike by his house every day and listen from the street. I drove my parents crazy asking them for drums, and then I really drove them crazy after I got them. I\u2019m lucky to have a very supportive family.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"RyanRogers\"<\/a>Favorite musicians\/bands?<\/strong> I\u2019m completely obsessed with the new Big Wreck album right now; I highly recommend all of their albums. I\u2019m a big Bowie fan too, especially his last four albums. I can always listen to Led Zeppelin. I learned a lot of drum licks from Zeppelin\u2019s \u201cThe Song Remains the Same\u201d concert video. The Beatles and all of their solo albums, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Music schooling:<\/strong> I took a few lessons as a kid, but I\u2019m mostly self-taught. I\u2019ll occasionally harass Dr. Burkhead for a few lessons; he\u2019s helped me with some Jazz basics and technique issues. I could pick his brain for hours. I also have to credit the Middle\/High school music program for teaching me the basics of reading, rudiments, stick technique, and timing, though. It makes me sad to see schools cutting music programs these days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite style\/genre:<\/strong> I go through phases like anyone, but I\u2019m a rock guy at heart. My brother, Derek, had a killer album collection that I would raid on the reg; it was like a classic rock record store.<\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite instrument:<\/strong> Drums! Bass is definitely my second choice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do you practice?<\/strong> Mostly out at my recording studio near Sardis Lake. I should really practice more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you ever been hassled for practicing?<\/strong> Oh yeah. My old band, Geronimo Rex, all lived and rehearsed in a house together in Fondren. The Neighbors weren\u2019t too thrilled about it, so JPD was a regular visitor at the abode, which eventually led to eviction.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the first concert you witnessed?<\/strong> Hmmm. I hate to say, but probably Motley Crue\/ Warrant at the Jackson coliseum. It was the tour that Tommy Lee was solo\u2019ing above the crowd. As a kid, I was blown away by that. Now, not so much.<\/span><\/p>\n

What bands have you played in?<\/strong> Geronimo Rex, Maria Y el Sol, Rocket 88, Creep Left, The Minor Adjustments, Jimmy Phillips and The Ruminators, The Mississippians (Ole Miss jazz band), and Jimbo Mathus & The Tri-State Coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n

One thing you would like to change about Oxford\u2019s music scene:<\/strong> Since I moved here, I\u2019ve heard about the \u201cglory days\u201d of Oxford\u2019s music scene. I\u2019d love to get back to that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most famous person you\u2019ve jammed with:<\/strong> On tour with Jimbo this year, Glen Graham (Blind Melon) double drummed with me on three songs at our show in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I\u2019m a huge Blind Melon fan, so it was a really cool moment for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you an artist or do any other creative arts?<\/strong> Just music. Between gigs, working in my studio and a part-time job, that\u2019s about all that my time allows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you have a \u201cday job\u201d? If so, where<\/strong>? I couldn\u2019t call it a \u201cday job,\u201d but when I\u2019m not on the road, I\u2019m usually working in my studio (Sand Dog Studios). I\u2019ve also worked for PRG since 2007. It\u2019s a great gig! They keep a lot of musicians afloat around here. One of these days, we\u2019re gonna put together a PRG family band.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do you hang out in Oxford?<\/strong> Larry\u2019s, City Gro, The Blind Pig, and Ajax are my favorites.<\/span><\/p>\n
