There are three home games left at Vaught-Hemingway<\/strong> this season. Georgia <\/strong>comes to town November 7, Wofford <\/strong>follows on November 21, and the Egg Bowl<\/strong> lands in Oxford <\/strong>the Friday after Thanksgiving<\/strong>, November 27. If you’ve ever tried to book a room in Oxford for one of those weekends, you already know the math. Hotels fill up fast, and plenty of locals hand their keys to visiting fans and head out of town for a couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s good money. It’s also a little nerve-wracking the first time a group of strangers sleeps in your bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most first-time hosts learn the same lesson early. Guests don’t need your stuff, and you don’t want them near it. Family photos, the good bourbon, the closet full of clothes, the kids’ toys, the paperwork on the desk. Pull it out before anyone shows up and the place feels more like a rental, and you’ll stop worrying about it halfway through the second quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with a lockable closet or an owner’s room if you’ve got one. A lot of people find it fills up quicker than they expected, though, especially if they’re hosting more than once. That’s where a small storage unit across town earns its keep. Iron Storage<\/strong><\/a> runs a fully climate-controlled facility on Oxmoor Lane, just off Old Highway 7 and a few minutes from the Square, with drive-up units and an electronic gate. Access runs 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, so you can drop a carload off Thursday night and pick it up Sunday once the crowd heads home. A 5×5 is usually plenty for the personal stuff. Bigger units make sense if you’re stripping out the extra furniture to fit more air mattresses. Climate control matters more than you’d think here, too. Photos, documents and nice clothes don’t love a humid Mississippi <\/strong>fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few other things worth doing before game week. Check that your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance knows you’re hosting, since some policies don’t cover short-term guests. Look up Oxford’s rules on short-term rentals before you list. Leave a one-page house guide with parking, Wi-Fi and checkout time. And please, lock up the thermostat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then go enjoy your weekend somewhere quiet, or catch the game with friends who aren’t renting their house out. The Grove will still be there. So will your stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
