(TLV) \u2013 On October 12 the 143rd Mississippi Blues Trail marker was unveiled on The Square to acknowledge the wide variety of blues activity that has taken place historically in Oxford and Lafayette County.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Howlin-Madd.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Howlin-Madd.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"Howlin' Madd\" class=\"wp-image-16700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Howlin-Madd.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Howlin-Madd.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Whereas some markers acknowledge particular individuals, such as <strong>Muddy Waters <\/strong>or <strong>B.B. King<\/strong>, this marker covers topics including locally born blues artists <strong>R.L. Burnside <\/strong>(College Hill), <strong>Herbert Wiley <\/strong>(Oxford), and <strong>Bill Perry, Sr. <\/strong>(Tula); the <strong>Fat Possum <\/strong>label, which was founded in Oxford in 1991; photographer \/ writer \/ promoter <strong>Dick Waterman<\/strong>; local clubs that have featured blues over the last decades, including long departed venues such as <strong>The Gin <\/strong>and <strong>The Hoka<\/strong>; as well as the fife and drum picnics that took place for many years on the grounds of the home of African American businesswoman <strong>Molly Barr<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Oxford-Blues-Marker-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Oxford-Blues-Marker-1.jpg?resize=600%2C493\" alt=\"Oxford Blues Marker 1\" class=\"wp-image-16698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Oxford-Blues-Marker-1.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Oxford-Blues-Marker-1.jpg?resize=300%2C246&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The marker complements another local marker, titled \u201cDocumenting the Blues,\u201d that was unveiled in February of 2009 on campus next to the Center For the Study of Southern Culture. Topics addressed there include the work of blues scholar and Center founder <strong>Dr. William Ferris<\/strong>, <em>Living Blues <\/em>magazine, which was acquired by the Center in 1983, and The Blues Archive at The University Library, which was founded in 1984.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The marker is located on the median strip in front of <strong>Rooster\u2019s Blues House<\/strong>, less than fifty feet from the location of the shoe repair shop that was run for many years by Herbert Wiley, leader of <strong>The Checkmates<\/strong>. Throughout the 60s The Checkmates played both on campus and at juke joints on Old Sardis Road. Wiley retired from playing in the early 70s, and reformed The Checkmates in the early 2000s.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blues-Marker-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blues-Marker-2.jpg?resize=600%2C591\" alt=\"Blues Marker 2\" class=\"wp-image-16699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blues-Marker-2.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blues-Marker-2.jpg?resize=300%2C295&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blues-Marker-2.jpg?resize=50%2C50&amp;ssl=1 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One of the images on the backside of the marker is an early 60s photo taken by <strong>Martin Dain <\/strong>in the early 60s of the B&amp;B Cafe, an African American establishment that was located behind Wiley\u2019s shoe shop. Wiley recalls that the cafe featured a jukebox filled with blues and soul records, and that blues musicians sometimes played at the considerably rougher Low End Caf\u00e9, aka the \u201cbucket of blood,\u201d which was located east of the square near where Newk\u2019s now sits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Shy-Marker.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Shy-Marker.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"Shy Marker\" class=\"wp-image-16706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Shy-Marker.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Shy-Marker.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Attendees at the ceremony included Herbert Wiley, Checkmates members <strong>J.D. Mark <\/strong>and <strong>Mattie Crockett<\/strong>, <strong>Kenny Brown<\/strong>, who played for many years with R.L. Burnside and recorded his own CD for Fat Possum, and Bill \u201cHowl-n-Madd\u201d Perry, Sr., who played blues, gospel, and soul for many years in Chicago and Los Angeles before returning to Lafayette County in the 1980s. He was accompanied by his daughter <strong>Sharo<\/strong>, aka <strong>\u201cShy\u201d <\/strong>and son <strong>Bill, Jr<\/strong>, aka <strong>\u201cMysteryo,\u201d <\/strong>who both play in their father\u2019s band. In addition to his performances in clubs, Perry, Sr. also works as an instructor in the blues education program at Clarksdale\u2019s Delta Blues Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The first markers were unveiled on the Mississippi Blues Trail in late 2006, and an additional fifty or so are planned.
