{"id":166414,"date":"2026-10-01T06:40:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T11:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=166414"},"modified":"2026-09-30T18:42:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T23:42:41","slug":"between-peaches-and-pumpkins-inside-oxfords-seasonal-food-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/between-peaches-and-pumpkins-inside-oxfords-seasonal-food-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Between Peaches and Pumpkins: Inside Oxford&#8217;s Seasonal Food Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">by Suad Patton Bey, photographs by Megan Wolfe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calendar has shifted from September to October, but<strong> <\/strong>Oxford<strong> <\/strong>hasn&#8217;t quite decided what season it wants to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pumpkin spice has arrived in coffee cups, football has returned to <strong>Vaught-Hemingway Stadium<\/strong>, and stores are filling their shelves with sweaters. But at the<strong> Oxford Community Market (OXCM)<\/strong>, summer isn&#8217;t ready to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peaches and tomatoes still crowd the tables, while the first signs of autumn begin appearing among the produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>SoLa<\/strong>, the changing season can be seen directly on the plate. A summer bluefin tuna dish served with tomato salad has already transitioned to cabbage as summer produce begins to fade. Corn and figs are arriving next\u2014two short-lived crops that chef <strong>Erika Lipe<\/strong> jokingly calls \u201cthe only things that console me once tomato season is over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen tomatoes, corn, peppers, squash, and greens are at their peak, we want to take advantage of them while they\u2019re here rather than trying to force the same menu year-round. It keeps things interesting for us and, hopefully, for our guests too,\u201d Lipe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same seasonal rhythm shapes the kitchen at <strong>Snackbar<\/strong>, where the menu changes every six weeks. Some ingredients remain available throughout the summer, while others can disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. OXCM Director <strong>Betsy Chapman<\/strong> said the period between the two growing seasons can create \u201ca little bit of a dip in the market\u201d before cooler weather arrives and fall crops begin to appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And among the most anticipated are pumpkins. \u201cEveryone&#8217;s favorite fall crop is pumpkin,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind those seasonal menus are relationships between Oxford&#8217;s chefs and the farmers who grow their ingredients. Local farms supply restaurants ranging from <strong>The Oliver <\/strong>to <strong>City Grocery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSaint Leo was the very first one to be very aligned with what we did,\u201d said <strong>Mark Mounger <\/strong>of <strong>HalleluYAH Gardens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saint Leo<\/strong> began talking with Mounger as early as January and February about what produce the restaurant would need for the coming season. Weather and growing conditions can affect whether a farm is able to meet the demand for a particular crop. When a harvest exceeds expectations, local chefs find ways to make use of the surplus. Mounger recalled one week when the farm harvested hundreds of pounds of colored bell peppers. Lipe and Markowitz didn&#8217;t need the peppers immediately, but both decided to pickle them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were like, \u2018OK, give me 40 pounds.\u2019 Both of them just went behind the table and loaded up,\u201d Mounger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chapman has watched farmers like HalleluYAH Gardens grow their businesses over the years by identifying what customers and local chefs want. Okra, melons and some tomatoes are still available as shoppers await cooler-season crops: lettuces, collard greens, kale, carrots and radishes. As temperatures fall further, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a great deal to look forward to this fall,\u201d Chapman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a few weeks, Oxford lingers between the lively, bright produce of summer and the incoming abundance of the fall harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a
