For <strong>Dexter McCluster<\/strong>, the former <strong>Ole Miss All-American<\/strong> and <strong>NFL <\/strong>standout, service to others has become just as important to his legacy as his remarkable football career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/36fb095973d34929aec90f43466c3f27\/1\/e1423fec123ceba5423fb37d3d00424c346482e8fa9a3ff2c7b275284a9ac5e1?cache_buster=1789658437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ole Miss Women&#8217;s Council for Philanthropy<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0recognized McCluster&#8217;s commitment to leadership, mentorship and community service by naming him the <strong>2026 Emerging Young Philanthropist<\/strong>. Photo by Matthew Sharpe\/Department of Athletics<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known for his electrifying performances at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and in NFL stadiums across the country, McCluster has spent the years since his playing career investing in young people through mentorship programs, football clinics, community outreach and advocacy efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Saying Dexter is a leader on and off the field may be a cliche, but it is the truth,&#8221; said <strong>Candie Simmons<\/strong>, Women&#8217;s Council chair. &#8220;He hung up his cleats professionally, but he continues to serve the football and athletics community through football clinics, speaking engagements and so much more.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Receiving the award, McCluster said the recognition was both humbling and motivating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Having the Women&#8217;s Council present me with this honor is, for me, such a special acknowledgment of the work I&#8217;ve done to assist and support others,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Any type of recognition for something that you do out of the purity of your heart is inspirational to me and gives me an extra push to keep doing this type of work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Women&#8217;s Council selected McCluster because his life and work reflect the organization&#8217;s core values of leadership, mentorship and philanthropy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of his philanthropic work focuses on youth mentorship, community empowerment and health advocacy. Through free youth football camps, McCluster teaches athletic skills while emphasizing teamwork, perseverance and academic success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His goal is not simply to develop better athletes, but to help young people build confidence and character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also remains actively engaged with the university. In 2024, he served as featured speaker for the <strong>Women&#8217;s Council&#8217;s Robert C. As an NFL Alumni Fatherhood Champion and the father of five daughters and a son, he advocates for stronger families and greater paternal involvement through initiatives such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/36fb095973d34929aec90f43466c3f27\/3\/a238a634c179d9b04f13315e48eea3aef89e53b66e5b7c9eb11cf6fbd1c45130?cache_buster=1789658437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NFLAFatherhood.org<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also supports breast cancer awareness efforts and youth literacy initiatives, extending his impact far beyond the football community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McCluster said his desire to help others began early in life and grew stronger as he gained experience and perspective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After reaching the highest levels of college and professional football, despite widespread doubts about his size, he realized that his journey could inspire others facing their own obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I encountered a lot of people who told me that someone of my size and stature couldn&#8217;t succeed in either college or professional sports,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Those who doubted my abilities didn&#8217;t see the vision God had placed in my heart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That motivates me to seek out and motivate those who have doubts about their own abilities. I want them to know that if I can do it, they can, too. Photo by Nathan Latil\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Ole Miss football&#8217;s most versatile and celebrated players, McCluster earned All-America honors before being selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the <strong>Kansas City Chiefs<\/strong>. During a professional career that also included stops with the <strong>Tennessee Titans<\/strong> and <strong>San Diego Chargers<\/strong>, he built a reputation as an explosive receiver, running back and return specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet even during his NFL career, community service remained a priority. While with the Chiefs, McCluster participated in outreach efforts through the Chiefs Community Caring Team, frequently visiting pediatric patients and helping lift spirits at facilities such as Children&#8217;s Mercy Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When it comes to leadership, mentorship and philanthropy, Dexter sets a standard,&#8221; Simmons said. &#8220;As a father, he spends quality time with his kids, teaching them about being strong, endurance, staying focused and committed. He does the same with all the young people he works with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He is always speaking to young athletes. He mentors them by providing them with a positive example, guidance and motivation.
