{"id":165749,"date":"2026-09-10T12:04:36","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=165749"},"modified":"2026-09-10T12:04:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:04:36","slug":"um-study-peers-into-molecular-roots-of-eye-health-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/um-study-peers-into-molecular-roots-of-eye-health-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"UM Study Peers into Molecular Roots of Eye Health, Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>EPSCoR-funded project will study molecules that make up eyes&#8217; outer walls<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>by Clara Turnage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> are working to map the molecular makeup of the eye&#8217;s outer wall to better understand why some people may be more vulnerable to conditions such as nearsightedness and glaucoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/1\/ac3dec8b6451ddcbe9d88520e238d09248f198926f1927e81fe47e5205881d82?cache_buster=1788971862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Science Foundation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0recently awarded an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/2\/7fffe38274664826f91097aa78b949d876a6d3e9d6408d7252afa35d1007725c?cache_buster=1788971862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0fellowship to <strong>Yi Hua<\/strong>, assistant professor of biomedical engineering. Hua and Shahjalal will partner with <strong>Umesh Desai<\/strong>, chair of medicinal chemistry at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/3\/d8164aa5b82756dffc9b7d2e1fc6bcf70d572fc7ea62a637958140f403145047?cache_buster=1788971862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Virginia Commonwealth University<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My lab is a biomechanics lab, but this is a complex problem that involves biochemistry,&#8221; Hua said. &#8220;For us to study this question, we need training and to work with another lab that specializes in biochemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s why we want to visit the lab in Virginia, so we can learn these techniques and bring them back to Mississippi.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glaucoma is the world&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/4\/c7e6dd1fc6bf8b71e96b38e8445ad9621bb6355008569576df9eeda1cedf870d?cache_buster=1788971862\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second-leading cause of blindness<\/a>. Nearsightedness affects more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/5\/36a59e74eb9422b415e8a2ea575259bb8e37fb9b376044d15197f62432abeb0f?cache_buster=1788971862\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30% of the global population<\/a>, but research shows&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/6\/1c5fc4df5375aebf8aff7e3baa50fc94a243c7ffa9603277b49e734a846f0cac?cache_buster=1788971862\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that number is growing.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The causes behind these conditions remain unclear, but Hua and Shahjalal believe the sclera could play a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sclera is a tough but flexible layer of tissues that help maintain the&nbsp;eye&#8217;s shape and withstand internal pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In the sclera, collagen helps maintain the shape of the eye, but one of the important extracellular molecules is glycosaminoglycans, which we call GAGs,&#8221; Shahjalal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GAGs \u2013 small, sugar-like molecules \u2013 help organize the collagen fibers and influence how the sclera responds to pressure. Understanding the placement and function of the sugar-like molecules in a healthy eye will give them a baseline for future research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is very important for the future endeavors of our lab because we have to make sure we understand GAGs very accurately before we study them further,&#8221; Hua said. &#8220;In the next stage of this research, we plan to remove GAGs and do testing to see how that changes the eye&#8217;s mechanical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;But to remove the GAGs, we have to know what they are and where they are.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In myopia, or nearsightedness, the eye has elongated, and the sclera has stretched. Hua&#8217;s previous research has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/138381b2e6194248a87d9eb5c9a1c345\/7\/05c576a8ae88ba9e7807a1ac1ae418a0abc4cc2c1e6aee7dfeb22bda373a6aa1?cache_buster=1788971862\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">connected glaucoma to elevated eye pressure<\/a>, which also affects the sclera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creating a map of the eye will allow the researchers to test whether the distribution of GAGs plays a role in those conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our hypothesis is that maybe for glaucoma patients and for myopia patients, the GAG distribution is different in different regions of the eye, but that is currently a question we can&#8217;t answer,&#8221; Hua said. &#8220;First, we have to have a characterization of these molecules. That&#8217;s what this study will provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think of this research like a foundation.
