{"id":165501,"date":"2026-09-02T20:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T01:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=165501"},"modified":"2026-09-02T20:19:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T01:19:12","slug":"um-researchers-explore-how-developing-hearts-recover-from-early-errors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/um-researchers-explore-how-developing-hearts-recover-from-early-errors\/","title":{"rendered":"UM Researchers Explore How Developing Hearts Recover from Early Errors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Undergraduate researchers gain experience, community through NSF-funded project<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>by Clara Turnage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> biologist is studying how developing hearts bounce back from early setbacks, work that could improve scientists&#8217; understanding of congenital heart defects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heart is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b88c883f117549b8b0c20672a0fb64d0\/1\/9e09bff9753c555eaf2394cb314e6f75ab64d61b74d2dbba6301991d2684d064?cache_buster=1788364277\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the first functioning organ to develop in the body<\/a>, and congenital heart defects are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b88c883f117549b8b0c20672a0fb64d0\/2\/5c629167e77c27dedc5b0514079a6a21697a4956e9abb8490bc3ea8d8041b46f?cache_buster=1788364277\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most common type of birth defects<\/a>. But not all genetic mutations or environmental exposures in early heart cells lead to a birth defect; often, the heart recovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Joshua Bloomekatz<\/strong>&#8216;s research focuses on how some early-stage embryos compensate for these developmental mistakes to better understand why others do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is a fundamental biology question, but in the long term, it could give us an idea of how (heart defects) happen,&#8221; said Bloomekatz, associate professor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b88c883f117549b8b0c20672a0fb64d0\/3\/393cf63a4544fe532b31ea664dec4a21892540b95628ac519c988241cf9f473a?cache_buster=1788364277\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biology<\/a>. &#8220;If we can figure out the recovery processes, we may be able to figure out a way to stimulate them so that we can overcome birth defects later on. Zebrafish are a\u00a0translucent\u00a0species of minnow that share\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b88c883f117549b8b0c20672a0fb64d0\/6\/17e249ed901ebf5e54c790a10c642590fc56d4fc4a7112d5f3d60c5c1b7ab5f9?cache_buster=1788364277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70% of human genes and have a cardiovascular system that closely resembles\u00a0humans<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Omeyimi Dimowo<\/strong>, a sophomore biology major at Ole Miss from Lagos, Nigeria, and <strong>Allison Holmes<\/strong>, a senior biology major from Potts Camp, are helping to make those earliest stages of heart development visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The end goal is that translational medicine and seeing how this research right now in zebrafish could at some point help us prevent congenital heart defects in humans,&#8221; Dimowo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heart starts as two groups of cells on opposite sides of an embryo. Those cells migrate toward one another, merge at the center of the embryo, and then twist to form chambers of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even at these first, earliest stages of development, the heart can heal defects, Holmes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like a fail-safe that the body has,&#8221; she said. &#8220;If something goes wrong, there is a process there to rescue it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding that fail-safe could support future research on congenital heart defects in humans, said<strong> Ethan Barker<\/strong>, a senior general business major from Madison on the research team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In order to understand why heart defects happen, you also have to know why they don&#8217;t happen,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If you can understand why one heart may be healthy and another unhealthy, you can give yourself a path back to normalcy from a defect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Knowing how the heart is supposed to work is step number one to preventing those defects.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the grant, Bloomekatz also created a research-focused undergraduate course on cardiovascular resilience. Barker and Holmes took the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If I didn&#8217;t take that class, I doubt I would be participating in this research,&#8221; Barker said. &#8220;The class was so different from anything I&#8217;d taken before because it was a transition from all of the textbooks and the lectures to real, self-directed research.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exposing students to research early allows them to see themselves as scientists, Bloomekatz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It was a lot of work, but I think it&#8217;s really worthwhile because they get to see that everything is connected,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Genetics is not separate from biochemistry, is not separate from cell biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Things become integrated, and they have the chance to take the things they&#8217;ve learned across multiple classes and put them into action. Photo by Clara Turnage\/University Marketing and Communications<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also exposes students to other avenues for their interest in science, Dimowo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oftentimes, when someone is interested in biology or chemistry, they feel like the only end goal is med school,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But when you get opportunities like this, you see the other fields and careers that are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It really helps you make a complete, informed decision when you have those experiences.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the five-year grant has ended, the students will have graduated. Holmes and Barker hope to be entering their first year of residency following medical school, and Dimowo hopes to be a graduate student working toward a doctorate in genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the experiences they gained through the Ole Miss program will stay with them, Holmes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This lab has given us a lot of great tools to go forward, not just for&nbsp;med school, but for anything we want to do in the future,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We all have our jobs, and we&nbsp;have to work together to keep everything running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think we&#8217;ve really built a community. We help each other. We ask questions.
