Ole Miss alumna Teresa Parker kicks off lecture slate on Wednesday, September 9<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Documentarians, historians, and Southern studies alumni are just a few of the people included in a packed fall semester of SouthTalks<\/strong> at the University of Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SouthTalks is a series of events, including lectures, performances, film screenings, and panel discussions, that explore the interdisciplinary nature of Southern studies and delve into the region’s culture and life. All events are at Barnard Observatory<\/strong>, unless otherwise noted, and are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As a warm-up to next year’s alumni-focused SouthTalks, we have two Southern studies alumni on the schedule for this fall,” said Katie McKee<\/strong>, director of the university’s\u00a0Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong><\/a>. “The events planned also show our deep commitment to collaborating with entities across campus and with the community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series kicks off at\u00a0noon Wednesday, September 9 with Southern studies alumna Teresa Parker<\/strong> discussing her first book manuscript,\u00a0Chasing Shadows: Slavery and Silhouettes in the Nineteenth-Century South<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the millions of enslaved people whose labor underwrote the immense wealth of the antebellum South, few were ever memorialized in works of art. In her talk, Parker highlights the power of material culture by examining a rare group of previously unknown silhouettes, cut in the 1840s by French-born artist Auguste Edouart, and the archival work that reconstructs the lives of the enslaved individuals they represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parker is a cultural historian and public folklorist who earned her doctorate in history from Tulane University<\/a>. She serves as chair of the Louisiana Folklife Commission and as a longtime cultural consultant for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ashant\u00e9 Reese<\/strong> will discuss her latest book,\u00a0Gather: Black Food Nourishment and the Art of Togetherness<\/em>,<\/strong>\u00a0with Jodi Skipper<\/strong>,\u00a0UM professor of anthropology and Southern studies,\u00a0at noon Monday, September 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reese is an anthropologist and\u00a0associate professor of African and African diaspora\u00a0studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Her\u00a0bookshows rich, on-the-ground stories of gathering around food in four spaces: gardens, family reunions, repasts, and protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This SouthTalk is a partnership among the Center for the Study of Southern Culture,\u00a0African American Studies Program<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0and the\u00a0Department of Anthropology and Sociology<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skipper returns to the SouthTalks spotlight at 5:30 pm Tuesday, September 22 to facilitate a discussion on the\u00a0potential for racial reconciliation in the United Stataes.\u00a0“Reclaiming the Legacy: How the Crowders Turned a Dark Past into Faith and Family<\/strong>”\u00a0also features Stephanie Thayer<\/strong>, a descendant of\u00a0one of the largest landowners and slaveowners in Grenada County,\u00a0and Hollis Crowder<\/strong>,\u00a0a descendant of people enslaved on the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several years ago, Crowder reached out to Thayer\u2019s family to better understand his family genealogy, and the two began to form a bond. They will discuss what they hope their relationship as descendants of landowners and slaveowners can symbolize for future generations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Danielson<\/strong> lectures about\u00a0“Lawrence Guyot Jr., the Atypical Activist”<\/strong>\u00a0at 5:30 pm Thursday, September 24.\u00a0Danielson will explore the life of Guyot, a Pass Christian native who rose to become the head of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and who challenged the all-white segregationist Democratic Party in 1960s Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danielson, a historian who received his doctorate in American history from UM, specializes in the Civil Rights Movement and resides in Butte, Montana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At noon Wednesday, September 30,\u00a0Sophia Rodriguez<\/strong> discusses her book\u00a0Undocumented in the U.S. South: How Youth Navigate Racialization in Policy and School Contexts<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0The author will examine the lived realities of undocumented youth \u2014 navigating a landscape of restrictive policies and historical segregation \u2014 who transform school hallways and community spaces into sites of resilience and belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KeShaun Pearson<\/strong> presents\u00a0“Unwavering Resistance: Community Robustness in the AI Era of Exploitation”<\/strong>\u00a0at noon Wednesday, October 7.\u00a0Pearson is a Memphis-based leader at the forefront of the fight for environmental justice, known for making complex issues accessible to the communities most affected by them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As executive director of Memphis Community Against Pollution<\/strong>, he leads campaigns to protect South Memphis residents from toxic air pollution and to safeguard community health from corporate overreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is cosponsored by the\u00a0Gulf Scholars Program<\/strong><\/a>, co-directed by McKee and Ole Miss biology professor Rich Buchholz<\/strong>, along with program manager Sophie Peranich<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 5:30 pm Thursday, October 8, a panel discussion will explore a photo exhibit\u00a0honoring farmers and advocates whose resilience and creativity shape both the Mississippi Delta and the nation.\u00a0“SOIL: Exhibition and Women in Agriculture”<\/strong>\u00a0is on display September 16\u2013October 8\u00a0in Barnard Observatory’s Gammill Gallery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The striking prints are made by photographer Justin Hardiman<\/strong>, curated by Adrienne Domnick<\/strong> and presented by\u00a0Partnership for a Healthier America<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rootswell<\/a>. This event is a partnership with the university’s\u00a0Center for Community Engagement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An\u00a0“Alumni Spotlight”<\/strong>\u00a0featuring Southern studies alumnus David Bittle<\/strong>r is set for 5 pm Thursday, October 15 in the Overby Center Auditorium<\/strong>. Bittler will discuss with McKee how his Southern studies degree has advanced his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bittler is Paramount Picture’s former executive vice president of communications, a post he held for 25 years, during which he led multiplatform campaigns across streaming, linear television, consumer products, and live experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tera W. Hunter<\/strong> presents this fall’s\u00a0Gilder-Jordan Lecture in\u00a0Southern Cultural History at 6 pm Tuesday, October 20 in Nutt Auditorium<\/strong>. Hunter will discuss how the Black family is significant to understanding legacies of race and power in American history, dating back to the colonial era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is the Edwards Professor of American History and chair of the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University. Hunter also is the author of Bound in Wedlock: Slave and Free Black Marriage in the Nineteenth Century<\/em> (Belknap Press, 2017)\u00a0and To\u00a0‘Joy My Freedom: Southern Black Women’s Lives and Labors After the Civil War<\/em> (Harvard University Press, 1997).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organized through the Southern studies center, the African American Studies Program<\/strong>,\u00a0Center for Civil War Research<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0and the\u00a0Department of History<\/strong><\/a>, the Gilder-Jordan Lecture Series is made possible through the generosity of the Gilder Foundation Inc. The series honors the late Richard Gilder, of New York, and his family, as well as Ole Miss alumni Dan and Lou Jordan, of Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At noon Wednesday, October 21,\u00a0Zachary Clary<\/strong> presents\u00a0“Walking Alone: James Meredith’s March Against Fear and the Politicization of Violence in the Black Freedom Struggle.”<\/strong>\u00a0Clary, a doctoral candidate in history at Vanderbilt University who was the 2025 Study the South research fellow, will explore what the March Against Fear meant, as well as its symbolic significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alabama poet and musician Lee Bains<\/strong> presents\u00a0“The Laborer Is Worthy of Their Hire: Stories and Sounds of Southern Solidarity”<\/strong>\u00a0at noon Wednesday, October 28.\u00a0In his debut poetry collection,\u00a0Work Lunch<\/em><\/strong>, set for publication in October by the Hub City Writers Project, Bains draws on his own experience at the intersection of work and food, specifically the daily ritual of a workday lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this SouthTalk, Bains will explore the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of Southern culture and values through the lens of labor and food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 4:30 pm, Bains joins author and UM creative writing instructor Max Hipp<\/strong> for a craft talk at Exploradora Coffee<\/strong> (463 Ryland Way) in Oxford.\u00a0Both the SouthTalk and craft talk are organized through a partnership with the\u00a0Department of English<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Southern Foodways Alliance<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 5:30 pm Monday, November 2 in Overby Center Auditorium, visiting documentarian Suzannah Herbert<\/strong> will screen her feature film\u00a0Natchez<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0The film captures\u00a0an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natchez<\/em> won Best Documentary at the 2025 Tribeca Festival and has been honored with 19 awards on the festival circuit and broadcast on PBS’s Independent Lens<\/em> in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Visiting Documentarian Series is made possible in part by the Berkley Hudson Visiting Documentarian Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At noon Wednesday, November 4,\u00a0Kevin T. Harrell<\/strong> presents\u00a0“They Won’t Die Alone: Incarcerated Caregivers and the Documentation of the Angola Prison Volunteer Hospice Program.”<\/strong>\u00a0Harrell, who earned a doctorate in American history from UM, will discuss his work documenting the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project’s curator conducted oral history interviews with recently released men who participated in the hospice program and continue to shape the legacy of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At\u00a05:30 pm Thursday, November 12, public historian Rhondalyn Peairs<\/strong> presents\u00a0“Sparking Epiphanies: Giving Voice to Hidden History in Plain Sight.”<\/strong>\u00a0Peairs, founder of Historich, an educational services and tourism company headquartered in Oxford, shows how storytelling provides an entry point for residents and visitors alike to connect with the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This SouthTalk is hosted in conjunction with the\u00a0Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library<\/a>‘s community collaborations for programming that align with the Smithsonian\u00a0Institution’s\u00a0“Spark! Places of Innovation”\u00a0exhibit<\/a>. The exhibit will be on display at the library from October 10\u2013November 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peairs also joins fellow documentary producers Jennifer Mizenko<\/strong> and Antonio Tarrell<\/strong> for a film screening and Q&A for\u00a0Moving Spirits: Encountering the Ancestors<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0at 5:30 pm Tuesday, November 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through dance, song and the search for ancestry, Moving Spirits<\/em>\u00a0illuminates the hidden histories of those enslaved on the property now known as Rowan Oak<\/strong>. It also reveals the enduring desire of Black Mississippians to uncover their family legacies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SouthTalks concludes its fall slate at 6 pm Friday, December 4 with the\u00a0Fall Documentary Showcase<\/strong>, which highlights the work of students enrolled in Southern studies documentary classes. Each artist will present their work, and attendees can interact with the artists during a reception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo exhibition will be on display in Barnard Observatory’s Gammill Gallery from December 4, 2026\u2013January 15, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
