A collaborative study between the<strong> University of Mississippi<\/strong> and the <strong>Mississippi Diabetes Network <\/strong>found that personalized telehealth coaching can help participants feel more\u00a0confident making those choices while improving their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/3074f017b3624191ae76f70426176d64\/1\/4d66c94cb1de419f71020b1bf5a24ada7fdaec9304fc6688414bb43b24bbbfdd?cache_buster=1787674236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Around 1 in 7 Mississippians<\/a>\u00a0live with diabetes, making it one of the nation&#8217;s top five states for rates of the disorder. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Mississippi faces a very interesting combination of challenges that makes diabetes even more difficult to manage,&#8221; said <strong>Caroline Brock<\/strong>, a master&#8217;s student in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/3074f017b3624191ae76f70426176d64\/3\/453f3dc93873838a7a108f936e6134ac9695cc74c62251a85a86067c27e9ed26?cache_buster=1787674236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public health<\/a>\u00a0and co-author of the study. &#8220;Many communities, particularly in rural areas like the Mississippi Delta, have limited access to healthcare providers, transportation barriers, food insecurity and fewer opportunities to receive diabetes education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Each of these factors makes it harder for people to get the continuous support they need.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand what makes a diabetes coaching program successful, the researchers tracked 27 patients as they took part in a Mississippi-based telehealth diabetes self-management education and support program called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/3074f017b3624191ae76f70426176d64\/4\/826b0a763656e2cda857bdaaa32b82726b265511dcff8d3c70c75f7346d3fce6?cache_buster=1787674236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Diabetes Solutions<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus of the study was not on clinical outcomes, but rather on better understanding patients&#8217; experiences throughout the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Many studies hyper-focus on things like A1C levels, which is important to understand, but we also have to understand the user experience,&#8221; said <strong>Catherine Moring<\/strong>, program coordinator for Diabetes Solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Why are people&nbsp;participating, or why are they not participating? When do they&nbsp;participate? What is it that keeps them engaged and what are the challenges that they see?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A diabetes diagnosis can often come with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/3074f017b3624191ae76f70426176d64\/5\/eb596bbd914171b0bd2bfff05f57934a700b32b758f4eefb6e9616fa201e6399?cache_buster=1787674236\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new vocabulary and a new rulebook<\/a>&nbsp;for staying healthy. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Managing diabetes requires making decisions every day and knowing someone was there to celebrate successes and help navigate setbacks made participants feel more confident and less alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managing diabetes is particularly relevant in Mississippi, the researchers said. The lack of access to care, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/3074f017b3624191ae76f70426176d64\/7\/e35912c06f15f335d05b7a5b0d035c134a0b2dd301ecba5f5a411780c7fcd7b5?cache_buster=1787674236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extremely high rate of controlled, uncontrolled, and undiagnosed diabetes<\/a>, and the education gap for newly diagnosed patients is a dangerous combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Often what those patients need is someone to walk with them on this journey,&#8221; Moring said. &#8220;We like to say that everyone who was ever great at anything had a coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is an opportunity for them to be really great at managing their diabetes and feeling better.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the researchers, the issue is also close to home. Brock is from Greenwood. Moring is a three-time graduate of Ole Miss who moved to the Delta to build a community and hospital wellness center for residents, meeting people where they are.
