Photo by Hunt Mercier\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Through the relationships, professional learning and leadership opportunities provided by this program, these teachers will help strengthen mathematics education across<strong> Mississippi<\/strong> and elevate the teaching profession for years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funded by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2e10eeeb9ebc470c9cd5c3a9dad04e79\/3\/3ea85e43d4cfe082cf450846f62b7111b33cc6706d8ac6255a18a8ddef65bd4c?cache_buster=1785167476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5 million grant from the <strong>National Science Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2e10eeeb9ebc470c9cd5c3a9dad04e79\/4\/aaf6fa3e509a965f2bcc1e1585f2d32a04e1cb7f610bb3790ba471279726bb93?cache_buster=1785167476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi STEM Education Alliance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a statewide partnership that aims to address the state&#8217;s teacher shortage while highlighting and supporting dedicated instructors, said <strong>Johnathan Hill<\/strong>, the alliance&#8217;s program coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Through collaborations with schools, higher education institutions, professional organizations and state education leaders, the alliance is working to strengthen Mississippi&#8217;s STEM teacher workforce, expand professional learning opportunities and improve STEM education for students across the state,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mississippi Department of Education&#8217;s 2025-2026&nbsp;Educator Workforce Shortages and Strategies&nbsp;report&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/2e10eeeb9ebc470c9cd5c3a9dad04e79\/5\/4e16334d50fb064ceaa658c370bab0720557e0b9e7f276171670841e31cae82e?cache_buster=1785167476\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">noted some 900 vacancies for STEM teachers<\/a>. By providing endorsement and professional development in teaching mathematics, the alliance hopes to allow teachers who are already teaching in Mississippi to help fill the gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alliance selected 16 educators for the inaugural group:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Franchesca Afrim, Brandon High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Melinda Austin, Hernando High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jalisia Cook, Ridgeland High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jennifer Crissey, Germantown High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mihir Datta, Holmes County Central High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reneice Glasper, Lewisburg High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>De&#8217;Adriana Jackson, Natchez Early College at Copiah-Lincoln Community College<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atoyia Jackson, Blue Mountain High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jessica King, Hernando Middle School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reshondra Lakes, West Tallahatchie High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jacqueline Lewis, Southeast High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Krystal Long, Hancock Middle School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kayla Morman, Grenada High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dane Peagler, Brandon High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Judith Terry, Center Hill High School<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ashton Winstead, Northwest Rankin High School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of the teachers is specializing in one of four content areas: middle math, algebra, geometry, and statistics and data literacy. Photo by Clara Turnage\/University Marketing and Communications<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As teachers, we have to build their confidence while also helping them master rigorous content.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is designed to help teachers show their students that math is for everyone and that mathematics has real-world applications that they can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Participation in this program will help me address the frequently asked question, &#8216;When am I ever going to use this?'&#8221; said <strong>Atoyia Jackson<\/strong>, who is in the statistics and data literacy content area. &#8220;My students will tackle real-world problem-solving that can be applied globally.
