But new research from the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> and the <strong>University of Southern Mississippi<\/strong> suggests some of&nbsp;students&#8217; favorite meals may contain more sodium and sugar than schools will be allowed to serve under updated federal nutrition standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/1\/9dd2035270a67fff80f2e004c593ac16a764672cad827617acfd0d4160a9d70b?cache_buster=1784738568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;will require schools across the United States to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/2\/44a5c32c371aa1885bf37452d04233f193e7f9ed3856e1d0aa508d2269104efe?cache_buster=1784738568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce sodium and added sugars in meals by fall 2027.<\/a>&nbsp;A new study published in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/3\/7b87099f4170ca98cbec9bc1e0a81a4181e96c76932780cb63e337500ab3758d?cache_buster=1784738568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Nutrition Reviews<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;aimed to identify which popular menu items are highest in sodium and sugar, giving school officials a starting point for creating healthier menus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;School meals are designed to meet nutrition standards, and for many children, they are among the most balanced meals they eat,&#8221; said <strong>Aleshia Hall-Campbell<\/strong>, executive director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/4\/1c6276af45f8dbcd63f4e2e387bdf742f7c22af4a8d9ae7b597f46925acea37e?cache_buster=1784738568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Institute of Child Nutrition<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;at <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>. &#8220;But because students may eat school breakfast and lunch many times each week, the nutrition quality of those meals matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Reducing added&nbsp;sugars and sodium is not about blaming school meals. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For families, the practical point is that these changes are not about taking away foods students enjoy,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They are about making the foods already served in schools a little healthier while keeping them familiar, flavorful, and appealing to students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This matters because school meals reach many children every day. For students who eat breakfast and lunch at school, even&nbsp;small changes in added sugar and sodium can make a difference over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make students&#8217; favorite foods healthier, the researchers surveyed 1,071 school nutrition professionals to determine what schools serve and what students eat most often. Then they reviewed recipes for those cafeteria items \u2013 such as pizza, smoothies, yogurt parfaits, muffins, and chicken wings \u2013 to identify which foods contained the highest amounts of sugar and sodium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, flavored chicken wings recipes average more than 2,100 milligrams of sodium per serving. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/8\/83c025280e0ef479bc1428055db98b536ef07dfadbe002738bf4fb97bf50ac09?cache_buster=1784738568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>USDA&#8217;s Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;recommends adults eat&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/9\/e05b32cfaea488f7fd1296078bcf743212227a8f813e6ad72a942e558a583075?cache_buster=1784738568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excess sodium intake over time is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/10\/0d5acf3d22db1af259c59573c937871ce31be4a05204a4a3b97c0c026dff3f37?cache_buster=1784738568\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">linked to high blood pressure<\/a>, a major risk factor for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6099a051022c46a5a1d356a397407b14\/11\/106636f0dbfded0abaeb6bc63560c790e873f33212c77beb2da091557a435d24?cache_buster=1784738568\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>. Because many students eat school meals every weekday, researchers say even modest reductions in sodium could have meaningful long-term health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Substituting herbs and spices for excess salt and sugar can make recipes healthier.
