Music is excited to introduce Dr. Tim Oliver<\/strong>, Interim Chair of the Department of Music, Director of Bands, and Professor of Music at the University of Mississippi<\/strong>. He conducts the Ole Miss Wind Ensemble<\/strong>, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting and music education, and works with colleagues across the department to advance the mission of music at Ole Miss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A native of Centralia, Missouri, Dr. Oliver earned his degrees from Truman State University<\/strong> and Florida State University<\/strong>. Prior to joining the Ole Miss faculty, he served for 16 years as Director of Bands and Coordinator of Wind and Percussion Studies at Arkansas State University<\/strong>, following faculty appointments at Temple University and the University of Kansas and earlier experiences as a public school band director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An active conductor, clinician, and scholar, Dr. Oliver\u2019s ensembles have been recognized at regional and national levels for their thoughtful programming and commitment to both traditional and contemporary wind repertoire. He has premiered or helped commission more than 50 new works for winds and has presented his research at major professional conferences, including the Midwest Clinic<\/strong> and CBDNA conferences. His scholarly interests include conducting pedagogy, wind band repertoire, and the relationship between music education and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his career, he has been committed to servant leadership, mentoring students and colleagues, and building programs that value collaboration, creativity, and artistic growth. Outside of music, Dr. Oliver enjoys spending time with his wife, Rebecca, and their children, cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, completing home projects, playing disc golf, and exploring science fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Words from the Chair<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since joining the University of Mississippi, I have been continually impressed by the talent, dedication, and passion of our students, faculty, and staff. Serving as Director of Bands has been one of the great honors of my career. The Ole Miss Bands<\/strong> represent the very best of what a university music program can be: a place where students develop as musicians, educators, scholars, leaders, and members of a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Interim Chair of the Department of Music, my focus is on building upon the strengths of our faculty, students, and programs while creating an environment defined by collaboration, communication, and shared purpose. I believe strongly that music education and music performance are not competing priorities\u2014they are complementary parts of a vibrant university music program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Ole Miss <\/strong>during this exciting time and look forward to working alongside our entire music community as we continue to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
