At first glance, many gardeners fear they’ve discovered a dangerous parasite. Fortunately, the truth is far less alarming.

Horsehair worms (also called Gordian worms) are fascinating creatures that are harmless to people, pets, livestock, and plants. In fact, their presence often indicates a healthy outdoor ecosystem.

A single horsehair worm swimming in a bird bath or pond. Submitted photo.

What Is a Horsehair Worm?

Horsehair worms belong to a group of animals called Nematomorpha. Adults resemble thin strands of brown, black, or tan fishing line or horsehair and typically measure 8 to 14 inches (20–35 cm) long while being only about 1 millimeter thick.

They spend their adult lives in water, where they mate and lay eggs. Before reaching adulthood, however, they develop inside insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, cockroaches, and occasionally beetles.

When mature, the worm leaves its insect host after the insect enters water. While this life cycle may sound unsettling, it is completely natural and has evolved over millions of years.

Where Will You Find Them?

Gardeners most commonly encounter horsehair worms in:

Bird baths

Garden ponds

Rain barrels

Pet water bowls left outdoors

Livestock water troughs

Rain puddles

Swimming pools

Damp sidewalks after heavy rain

You may occasionally see one slowly wriggling on wet soil after a rainstorm.

Are They Dangerous?

This is good news.

Humans: No. Horsehair worms cannot infect people and do not burrow into skin or live inside the human body.

Dogs and Cats: No. They do not infect pets. Even if a curious pet drinks water containing a horsehair worm, the worm cannot complete its life cycle in mammals.

Livestock: No. Horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry are not hosts and are not harmed.

Plants: Not at all. Horsehair worms do not feed on roots, leaves, stems, flowers, or vegetables.

Are They Beneficial?

In a small way, yes.

Horsehair worms naturally reduce populations of crickets and grasshoppers—two insects that can sometimes damage ornamental plants and vegetable gardens. Although they won’t eliminate pest populations, they are considered one of nature’s many forms of biological control.

Horsehair worms coiled in shallow water after emerging from an insect host. Submitted photo.

What Should You Do If You Find One?

The best response is . . . nothing.

Horsehair worms do not require treatment or control.

If one is in a bird bath or pet dish:

Simply remove it with a stick or gloved hand.

Dump and refill the water with fresh water if desired.

Continue using the container normally.

There’s no need to apply pesticides or disinfect the area.

Separating Fact from Fiction

Horsehair worms have inspired myths for centuries. One old legend claimed that horse hairs falling into water magically came to life. We now know that’s simply folklore.

Another common misconception is that they infect people or pets. Scientific research has shown that horsehair worms specialize in insects and cannot establish infections in humans, domestic animals, or livestock.

The Bottom Line

Horsehair worms may look like something from a science-fiction movie, but they’re among the most harmless creatures you’ll encounter in the garden. Their unusual appearance often causes unnecessary concern, yet they pose no threat to your family, your pets, your livestock, or your landscape.

So, the next time you discover one gracefully twisting through a puddle or bird bath, take a closer look. You’ve just encountered one of nature’s most remarkable—and misunderstood—garden residents.

Horsehair Worms: The Creepy Garden Visitor That’s Actually Good News Few garden discoveries create as much surprise as

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[27287
24673,35252,256,6153,5,24623,642,4,3
post-164056","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gardening","tag-bronwynne-bailey","tag-horsehair-worms","tag-lafayette-county","tag-lafayette-county-master-gardeners","tag-mississippi","tag-mississippi-state-university-extension","tag-ms","tag-oxford","tag-the-local-voice
https://i0.wp.com/www.thelocalvoice.net/oxford/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/AdobeStock_horsehair-worm-scaled.jpeg?fit=2560%2C1707&ssl=1
["GET
