For the agricultural industry,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/5\/b255cc54648965d28a81e03ed8e00e0578fd73e8f0326eed62b4376240712288?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which is already struggling with the impacts of environment change,<\/a>&nbsp;this increase represents a severe burden, Chen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These are challenges that humanity is going to face,&#8221; Chen said. &#8220;If we don&#8217;t start thinking about this now, there are a lot of people who are going to go hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In this paper, we wanted to ask, &#8216;What are the new, state-of-the-art technologies that can help us solve food insecurity?'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The review examines emerging technologies that can help increase crop yield while reducing the agricultural industry&#8217;s climate impact. They include cultured meat, hydroponic farming, gene-editing and AI-powered agriculture, among other strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A water-saving strategy using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/6\/efc7e62edf97b7bcc20399b2c954edfe02c570dc9747651ac1f866f92083b708?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crassulacean acid metabolism<\/a>&nbsp;could help crops retain water, Chen said. Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using gene-editing technologies such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/7\/f97ca517f9f8e0eb57c9e2a6cf3ba28e07de8d06665b00ce5e4e58cbfd36e93e?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CRISPR<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and multi-gene engineering, Chen&#8217;s research team is working to &#8220;teach&#8221; crops to reduce the amount of water they lose each day through the stomata by acting more like desert plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond changing the plants themselves, researchers also explored technologies that can monitor and improve growing conditions while reducing land and water use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Machine learning algorithms&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/8\/bb9df288d1d1196c384883a31651378440f3dc8adbbf2df8f92065b1f3b285a1?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can monitor a plants environment<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;checking the humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide concentration and other factors \u2013 and make changes to the greenhouse to keep the plant in optimal growing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/9\/bdda444c593afafa10de9b6a4722fa1a8e436d4683af421a3cc533cdff863893?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hydroponic<\/a>&nbsp;gardening offers ways to reduce land and water use while maintaining crop yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;One of the most important constraints to the agricultural industry is land,&#8221; Maqsood said. &#8220;Hydroponic gardening uses no soil. Instead, the plants get nutrients from water-based solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using water mixed with the different nutrients that plants need to grow, hydroponic gardens offer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/10\/6bc931544b9d5bdbbc360dc2f74749164171cbe857c373da2d2244bb312a01b6?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased output, quicker growth rates and easier pest control<\/a>. These gardens also use up to 90% less water than traditional farming, the researchers found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The system is actually more efficient because it has only the specific nutrients the plants need,&#8221; Maqsood said. &#8220;So, we&#8217;re using less and less water and actually cutting down on waste and runoff.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Livestock production accounts for more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/11\/b8dd4cedc36d577534bb4d842fafd3ed89f5f9d0b21c45098098afa7ecf3d651?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and 32% of methane gas emissions<\/a>. The factory farming industry also uses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/12\/f4ebf0ab82c44135f9804570ee14607c26bc167e36c89fe58f5f619bee00dd59?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vast amounts of freshwater<\/a>, both for livestock and to grow the feed the animals eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cultured meat, which is grown from animal cells in a controlled environment, offers an alternative to the global demand for protein that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/13\/454adcc057ac7e2920a162a4b5c733f0640642857346cbee0c0086310ef78b9a?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lowers greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and production costs.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is a technology that has already been used in other places,&#8221; Chen said. &#8220;Places like <strong>Singapore<\/strong>, they are already doing this.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven states, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/14\/1c8c8cf64abb80c7ba4ed20ff5b1e2833f5619f58044126ef627cb13b8fbd369?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mississippi,<\/a>&nbsp;have banned the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/15\/edb4319c1c0987d0e0a6b14edbd9a1d3361429b852e81fe996d3daded0991b53?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sale, manufacture or distribution of cultured meat.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are excited about the prospect of cultured meats,&#8221; Chen said. &#8220;But the biggest hurdle for implementing it is public acceptance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While meeting population needs in the future is important, food scarcity is an issue now, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In Mississippi,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/8ee8b6aa53b5489482f593ff397d4f8a\/16\/6544429c2e3649143d016c63d7b38c63865d6d820837819d6078f7bbacfc6930?cache_buster=1782143476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one-fourth of children<\/a>&nbsp;go to bed hungry,&#8221;
