Photo by Bruce Newman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scholars and teachers of <strong>William Faulkner<\/strong>&#8216;s work have convened at the university since 1974, making it the oldest continuously running academic conference devoted to the work of an American writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though the conference is taking a hiatus this summer, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7e1be4b2982b40e79534b0b88314a91b\/1\/10788b95f0a62241eb8d7fdd219e230f65d3f0c15c1b926cf09b2f70e82fb686?cache_buster=1780672832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is honoring the annual gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference was selected for a Citation of Merit because it celebrates the literary tradition of one of Mississippi&#8217;s greatest writers,&#8221; said <strong>Pete Halverson<\/strong>, MIAL president. &#8220;The conference contributes to Faulkner&#8217;s eminence and endurance by fostering ongoing scholarship, encouraging new generations of readers and writers, and preserving the cultural legacy of Yoknapatawpha for audiences far beyond our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The late <strong>Ann J. Abadie<\/strong>, then a faculty consultant for the university&#8217;s continuing education program, created the annual gathering with <strong>James W. Webb<\/strong>, former chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7e1be4b2982b40e79534b0b88314a91b\/2\/2cf06ef4039a8963fa54aad83947848698352370d845d1490020adb61aa5e5b0?cache_buster=1780672832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Department of English<\/strong><\/a>, and English professor <strong>Evans Harrington<\/strong>. The conference included local tours and faculty lectures for the expanding number of enthusiastic Faulkner visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The early success of Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha enhanced many of the university&#8217;s academic programs and contributed to the establishment of the cross-disciplinary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7e1be4b2982b40e79534b0b88314a91b\/3\/2dd012f734e4854886bcb5258b17f774cfebd1e346a0bda4a9619f283531deb0?cache_buster=1780672832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 1977,&#8221; Abadie wrote in a paper for the conference&#8217;s 50th anniversary in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jay Watson<\/strong>, Distinguished\u00a0Professor<strong>\u00a0Emeritus\u00a0of English<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Howry Professor Emeritus of Faulkner Studies<\/strong>, retired in 2025 after three decades at Ole Miss. He\u00a0directed the annual conference from 2011 to 2025, taking over from <strong>Donald M. Photo by Thomas Graning\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The conference&nbsp;helped set a precedent for communities and schools to come together over culture, leaving a legacy we continue to see in conferences and festivals all over the state,&#8221; Watson said. &#8220;This recognition from MIAL is a wonderful tribute to the impact of Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha on the cultural life of Mississippi.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference helped create new readers and teachers for Faulkner and his fellow Mississippi writers, and brought them from all over the world to Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list of distinguished speakers and themes over the years demonstrates how the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha conference has been instrumental in shaping new directions in scholarship on Mississippi&#8217;s most acclaimed writer. Such themes included\u00a0&#8220;<strong>The Maker and the Myth<\/strong>,&#8221; &#8220;<strong>Faulkner and Popular Culture<\/strong>,&#8221; &#8220;<strong>Faulkner and the Natural World<\/strong>,&#8221; &#8220;<strong>Global Faulkner<\/strong>,&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;<strong>Faulkner and Print Culture<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>Faulkner, Welty, Wright: A Mississippi Confluence<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1976, the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/7e1be4b2982b40e79534b0b88314a91b\/4\/06fee3f634bc598833edc562b9aa4648df03a31d12e0eac7a7cd8d0bcbf37679?cache_buster=1780672832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Press of Mississippi<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has published a series of volumes collected from proceedings of each year&#8217;s conference, which are instrumental in the field of Faulkner studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ted Atkinson<\/strong>, professor of English at <strong>Mississippi State University<\/strong> and MIAL vice president, nominated the program for the citation because of its valuable contributions to Mississippi&#8217;s rich literary heritage. Also, Watson&#8217;s retirement after years of dedicated leadership as conference director made the timing ideal, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The conference&#8217;s public-facing orientation has given Faulkner enthusiasts opportunities for education and enrichment while visiting the author&#8217;s storied &#8216;postage stamp of native soil&#8217; from across the country and around the world,&#8221; Atkinson said. &#8220;I am delighted that my colleagues on the MIAL board of governors voted in favor of the citation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Julie Beth Napolin<\/strong>, the incoming Howry Chair, will be the director for future conferences.
