The award will provide education, airfare and living expenses during her master&#8217;s program alongside mentorship and training opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Amber Cecil embodies the very best of what it means to be a scholar: intellectually rigorous, deeply curious and driven by a commitment to improving lives through science,&#8221; said<strong> Vivian Ibrahim<\/strong>, director of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/3\/776a04e0028d7d5a88fe6da29f59ec7a0fa235dbe77845277acccfeada35fbf8?cache_buster=1780419246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of National Scholarship Advisement<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As a first-generation student who earned a perfect GPA while conducting research on nanoparticle drug delivery for neurological diseases, she has already demonstrated remarkable focus and impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organized by the French cultural and education exchange\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/4\/a68a285088a43161a8e60dbf5ec6a36019589fe0f2c90f4f68ef6eff48e09bdc?cache_buster=1780419246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Villa Albertine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/5\/43e3040ecb55c78a7efa2fa0531122575ee48a5b730ee3d8630a32609c366bea?cache_buster=1780419246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>French Embassy<\/strong><\/a>, the fellowship was named after the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/6\/1c57cc5d930564075eb87e3560c40bcbec3806632c5b19b0781b9209c9e8ed44?cache_buster=1780419246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Marquis de Lafayette<\/strong><\/a>, a Frenchman who was instrumental in the <strong>American Revolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an undergraduate, Cecil worked in the lab of <strong>Eden Tanner<\/strong>, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, where she investigated ionic liquid-coated nanoparticles that could potentially deliver drugs to the brain. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Caring Companions made me realize I have a passion for being able to care for people,&#8221; she said. &#8220;In memory care (at one of the nursing homes), there was&nbsp;this one patient named Mr. Randy. He was an EMT, and he actually diagnosed his own Parkinson&#8217;s before the doctors did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was with him all four years at college, and so the bond that I created with&nbsp;him and the other patients only fueled my passion more for researching the diseases and trying to find a cure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since graduating last year, Cecil has spent nine months working with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/8\/8b1a44bc12ea343bd070ff7329a45973471945248ece7012275238f2735f1e27?cache_buster=1780419246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Children&#8217;s National Hospital<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in Washington, D.C., but Caring Companions is still going strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In our first meeting, we only had about 10 members, but when I left, there were more than 100 students in the group chat,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Seeing it&nbsp;flourish even after I left has been really great.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a part of the fellowship, Cecil will also join the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/9\/47e81e3adb65231b96e3886ae41f91419bf8d28d8921ccbf363dc3b1534c567e?cache_buster=1780419246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>French-American Leadership Program<\/strong><\/a>, which offers a yearlong series of lectures, master classes, site visits and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Her selection for the inaugural Lafayette Fellowship, an initiative of the French government to cultivate future global leaders, is a remarkable achievement, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/a449324c626d43de93af44be2bf01532\/10\/2d0433594574685f5b8b750c76e22aca3cf7eba0fbad0b2c7a6eb435b1e571df?cache_buster=1780419246\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of Mississippi<\/a>&nbsp;is honored to be represented in this first cohort,&#8221;
