Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That gap is especially important in the Deep South because structural factors, such as poverty, limited access to health care, stigma and social inequalities, continue to shape who is most affected and how effectively we can respond to the epidemic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The South has the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/c735374444b84f658f93bfb42b279ff0\/2\/fb42741a058fb43ee0e1be68ed7ed3059da751ec52e0c58745a5ef47631e7272?cache_buster=1780329072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest rate of new HIV cases in the country<\/a>, with nearly half of all new diagnoses nationwide. Of the 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States, approximately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/c735374444b84f658f93bfb42b279ff0\/3\/dd0e9be2d58a50dade779391e3c36399ce537409cc4f76fa3015d8de15e6fae6?cache_buster=1780329072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13% do not know they have contracted the virus<\/a>, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/c735374444b84f658f93bfb42b279ff0\/4\/6d47dcd510cf0c4235040e2ac241d170b74417251687d6f80feed483d25bfa4c?cache_buster=1780329072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American HIV Epidemic Analysis Dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mississippi has the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/c735374444b84f658f93bfb42b279ff0\/5\/2b9deb2f8744a775318149b202a605a929a1757134e13617a6c18b4aec55eb4e?cache_buster=1780329072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third-highest rate of new HIV infections<\/a>\u00a0in the nation, just behind Washington, D.C., and Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ole Miss researchers used public, county-level data across the South to create a prevention gap index, which functions like a scorecard for each county. It means the data suggest that local need may be greater than the services currently measured there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public health leaders can use the index to identify places where a closer look may be useful and better allocate available resources, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 877 counties mapped in the study, 220 had high HIV rates but relatively weak prevention systems in place.
