{"id":159145,"date":"2026-05-20T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=159145"},"modified":"2026-06-09T18:23:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T23:23:21","slug":"university-museum-opens-doors-to-community-partnerships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-museum-opens-doors-to-community-partnerships\/","title":{"rendered":"University Museum Opens Doors to Community Partnerships"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Museum staff meets audiences where they are, makes art accessible<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soft footsteps echoed through the galleries of the <strong>University of Mississippi Museum<\/strong> as a small group of visitors paused in front of a brightly colored <strong>Theora Hamblett<\/strong> painting, leaning closer to study its details and trade memories sparked by the art before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visitors, residents of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/aac8ed395d98428995d38dce975a80c6\/1\/a922177c117b666572a642e14233f1098361f8cbb9b83f9f55b2bf690699939b?cache_buster=1779205446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Elison Assisted Living of Oxford<\/strong><\/a>, moved slowly from exhibit to exhibit, lingering, asking questions and connecting with the works and with one another. Guided by <strong>Kassidy Franz<\/strong>, the museum&#8217;s education curator, the visit marked more than a tour; it was the beginning of a partnership rooted in care, curiosity and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;By welcoming people into the museum and then visiting them for hands-on art activities, we create something more personal,&#8221; Franz said. &#8220;It becomes less about a single visit and more about building relationships.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The education curator for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/aac8ed395d98428995d38dce975a80c6\/2\/542c0451d66802bfe032fa8ec23e821f6f756e543d03b33463e23807f593aa12?cache_buster=1779205446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0handles outreach and helps connect broader audiences with its collections through guided experiences and community partnerships. Franz said the collaboration with Elison Assisted Living reflects a broader shift in how the museum engages with the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the partnership, Elison residents toured the museum&#8217;s galleries before Franz visited the assisted living center to lead art-making activities inspired by what residents had seen. The tour and the exercise were focused on<strong> Mary Buie<\/strong> and <strong>Kate Skipwith<\/strong>, two Oxford sisters who were artists and collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The back-and-forth approach helps make art more accessible and meaningful,&#8221; Franz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mandy Conklan<\/strong>, lifestyle director at Elison Assisted Living, was immediately interested when Franz proposed the partnership. The program aligns with the center&#8217;s emphasis on lifelong learning and creative engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When you work with seniors in assisted living, some spaces are very welcoming and others are not,&#8221; Conklan said. &#8220;When someone invites you in, that matters. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elison residents regularly participate in arts programming, welcoming musicians, dancers and artists to their campus and showcasing creative work by residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re incredibly fortunate to live in a diverse community of different artists and genres of art where people want to share their talents,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Oxford and the university give us access to the arts without having to leave town.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <strong>Virginia Bower<\/strong>, a Greenwood native and Elison resident, the museum visit offered both enjoyment and familiarity. Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It makes me feel powerful to be able to go to places like this,&#8221; Bower said. &#8220;Our director schedules so many cultural activities, and I&#8217;m grateful for the opportunity to see the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m curious about everything,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And this is a good place to be curious.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit, residents explored hyper-realistic works by Oxford artist <strong>Glennray Tutor<\/strong>, colorful landscapes by Hamblett \u2013 who rose to prominence later in life \u2013 and historic scientific instruments dating to the 1800s, among others. Franz guided the group at a relaxed pace, encouraging conversation and questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <strong>Rick Hendrix,<\/strong> of West Helena, Arkansas, an Elison resident who attended graduate school at the university, the visit was especially meaningful. Coming from an Ole Miss family and with a father who loved painting, Hendrix said returning to the museum as an adult felt inspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though legally blind, he can see objects up close and was captivated by the colors in Hamblett&#8217;s paintings.
