{"id":159039,"date":"2026-05-18T08:43:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=159039"},"modified":"2026-05-18T08:43:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:43:34","slug":"um-study-links-teen-depression-with-higher-substance-use-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/um-study-links-teen-depression-with-higher-substance-use-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"UM Study Links Teen Depression with Higher Substance Use Rates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Findings point to need for early intervention in teen mental health, substance use<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adolescents experienced depression between 2021 and 2023, and those teens were significantly more likely to use substances such as alcohol, marijuana and opioids, according to a new national study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrew Yockey<\/strong>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/1\/1d44d3ef62b7bc346dfab0afa4cb028362acebbcad65d605927a7a80f01ac770?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0assistant professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/2\/5f449ec8a69fb66db36b978520b6bc761c4e967ff0c33c7f005b530f5787b3dc?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public health<\/a>, and graduate student <strong>Aminul Apu<\/strong> found that adolescents struggling with depression are more likely to use substances. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Research shows that depression will be the top contributor to mortality by 2030, and we know it is affecting adolescents,&#8221; Yockey said. &#8220;Depression is something that we have pharmacologically studied for years, but in this study, we wanted to look at the shifting patterns and correlations between depression and drug use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We found that the rate of major depressive episodes is higher in people who use substances, and that teens experiencing depression are more likely to use substances. That&#8217;s a connection.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a review of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/4\/4839c0fc9052eddea2a13c1e2520e2f642aa76caceaee7cdd3952795df56b140?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Survey on Drug Use and Health<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0data for 2021-23, Yockey and Apu found that alcohol and marijuana are the most common substances used among youth, with tobacco,\u00a0inhalants and opioids being less common. Some 20% of youth also reported having at least one major depressive episode in the last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is a growing mental health crisis among adolescents,&#8221; said Apu, a second-year public health master&#8217;s student from <strong>Bangladesh<\/strong>. &#8220;And we know that there is also an increase in substance use in this population, so we wanted to have a better understanding of the overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This can inform things like treatment and prevention.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the public has grown more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/5\/4adafb1f0966d3abaa72f0231ef738f1518c4c6efc0eebfadcb0d58a03d1e8d5?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aware of mental health challenges<\/a>&nbsp;in recent years, resources for adolescents are lacking, Yockey said. This is especially true for rural youth, which is a high-risk population, according to the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other high-risk populations included teen girls, who are three times more likely to report depression, and non-Hispanic white youth, who had the highest use rates of marijuana, inhalants and tobacco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of treating substance use as simply an issue of misconduct, a better approach might be to look for underlying reasons why adolescents use those substances, the researchers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That would&nbsp;help for getting intervention services early and specifically targeting these populations that are at highest risk,&#8221; Apu said. &#8220;For some people, (substance use) could be a form of entertainment, but for others it could be self-medicating or responding to hormonal activities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some substances, including alcohol, can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/6\/56332ec1ca467b92bd6b98b89a0af8a177363fbfa83d176d139e082f7bc00c3f?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heighten symptoms of depression<\/a>,&nbsp;making intervention even more vital, the researchers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yockey will continue his work on the intersection of depression and substance use through a new partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/7\/c75d5597c8d677ab8339d7d0dd75530b666a0b87a315c04c772896260de99320?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi Medical Center<\/strong><\/a>. In that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/8\/6b319f6c49421214feb5cb685349f3534b23ae12ac3065eeb341d5d8ae33d1c2?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Institutes of Health<\/strong><\/a>-funded study, Yockey and researchers from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/9\/189cca9439fa3aa67fade9d639edae166fd976eb2bd582b80c89c1110ac34c25?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>School of Medicine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will focus on suicidal thoughts in\u00a0relationship to methamphetamine use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The third-leading cause of death for young adults in Mississippi is suicide,&#8221; the Ole Miss researcher said. &#8220;And especially in Mississippi, between 2015 and 2019,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/e41b4e057f3640f08ac4ba37c4114a67\/10\/b014a03c6bc3cd8c39507f1a490e29dd8cd6149919febd6bdb66f47907a81e07?cache_buster=1778687480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">there was a nearly 150%<\/a>&nbsp;increase in methamphetamine use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We believe there is a bi-directional relationship there: if you use methamphetamine, your likelihood for suicidality increases, and if you&#8217;re suicidal, you&#8217;re more likely to use stimulants like methamphetamine. But there isn&#8217;t much research showing that connection.
