Photo by Srijita Chattopadhyay\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While each fraternity and sorority has its own national causes that individual chapters work to&nbsp;support with man-hours and\/or monetary donations; the councils work together to contribute locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With the university and Oxford being such an attractive place, holding so many memories and being so special to so many people, a lot of people get a really good sense of fulfillment and purpose from pouring back into it,&#8221; said <strong>Charlie Whittington<\/strong>, a sophomore accounting major from Jackson and IFC vice president of civic engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Because Oxford has given people so much, being able to work in the community and give back to it really gives everyone a sense of purpose and brings them together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chances are the volunteers that help make things happen around the community are members of a sorority or fraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you go to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/d4d3d559f37d4a8d944f07bfa96e2b82\/5\/1e31dfaef2fecfb1dbd678edd3da0493c0ddcd96f993cbf60a0ed64ae4213dbd?cache_buster=1778605963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oxford Community Market<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesdays or the food pantry on Wednesdays or the OPC soccer games, the student coaches and workers are most likely Greek,&#8221; said <strong>Grace Hosemann<\/strong>, a junior public policy leadership and Southern studies major from Mobile, Alabama, and <strong>College Panhellenic Council<\/strong> vice president of philanthropy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The councils recently worked together during the spring <strong>Greek Day of Service<\/strong> in April. Some 115 members of all three councils met at the <strong>Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union<\/strong> to organize donated books and then deliver them to <strong>Little Free Libraries <\/strong>throughout the Oxford and Lafayette County communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each council also has its own activities throughout the school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;NPHC performs more hands-on activities around campus and the community, and we\u00a0served more than 4,200 hours in the fall,&#8221; Williams said. &#8220;Following the ice storm, we worked with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/d4d3d559f37d4a8d944f07bfa96e2b82\/6\/588ba7c6d6c59b9bc90149f251c9dd26fd204f3dede67673a511da19edad5ba6?cache_buster=1778605963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Samaritan&#8217;s Purse<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to help community members.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group held a food drive in the fall that collected more than 200 food items, which were donated to areas in the <strong>Mississippi Delta<\/strong> with food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Before Thanksgiving, we collected seasonal items, such as mittens, hand warmers, fuzzy socks and snacks, put them together in bags, and gave them to people we were thankful for and appreciated, such as the &#8216;crosswalk lady&#8217; <strong>Jennifer Williams<\/strong>,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NPHC members also participated in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/d4d3d559f37d4a8d944f07bfa96e2b82\/7\/c3d72817d8cde6c1a7ece5c8221a9cf710ee8d6dbfe658e5aad6d6b5930cb662?cache_buster=1778605963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read Across America Week<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and helped with student drop-offs at local elementary schools this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>College Panhellenic Council<\/strong> combines activities with fundraising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council held its annual CASA Encore dance competition amongst the sororities in the fall, raising more than $450,000. The money benefits\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/d4d3d559f37d4a8d944f07bfa96e2b82\/8\/ca0ce03bfb5532bdd098ad3386771d58bc744c61affd74d01850c0807980d690?cache_buster=1778605963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CASA of North Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>, which trains volunteers to advocate for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C.A.R.E. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We had a really high number of participants this year and we were able to raise more than $40,000 to help provide mammograms to women who would otherwise not be able to afford them,&#8221; Hosemann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Interfraternity Council&#8217;s efforts often combine sports and fundraising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the spring, IFC holds its <strong>Match for Mental Health<\/strong> golf tournament, where every chapter has a team, benefiting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/d4d3d559f37d4a8d944f07bfa96e2b82\/10\/e06ee45d7010a1842b2819f5763be007b04962505baf53ed4770d1e76e8f7b7c?cache_buster=1778605963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University Counseling Center<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with $10,000 raised this year,&#8221; Whittington said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IFC&#8217;s biggest event of the year is in the fall, a basketball tournament raising around $130,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our &#8216;HOOPS&#8217; basketball tournament benefits B +, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/d4d3d559f37d4a8d944f07bfa96e2b82\/11\/34efb70db44e0449b650208a8de0992823c0320b3775028caae570651259a58a?cache_buster=1778605963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>William Magee Center<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and <strong>The (Helping Others Overcome Problems) HOOPs<\/strong> Initiative, which was started by an Ole Miss student,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The skills and principles that fraternity and sorority members learn from serving the community are useful beyond Ole Miss, Hoseman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Being Greek in college does a really good job instilling service into your day-to-day life, and subconsciously ties service with friendships,&#8221; she said. &#8220;When you get out of college, you automatically recognize helping your community and trying to be a part of something that&#8217;s bigger than yourself as a good way to connect with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And it prepares you to be able to go into any community that you&#8217;re a part of and help it as much as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Service and philanthropy also build skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re building yourself an internal resume, so to speak, by building confidence, learning how to talk to people, how to plan things \u2013 you can&#8217;t learn in a class; you can only learn those like by doing it,&#8221; Hosemann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you never know who you are helping, Williams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You might be helping somebody who&#8217;s going to give you your next job,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acts of service and support performed by sorority and fraternity members should not go unnoticed, Turuc said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;Seeing students rally around causes bigger than themselves, support one another and create real change in our community is incredibly inspiring,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This is where leadership, values and action all come together and it&#8217;s one of the things that makes me the most proud of our fraternity and sorority life community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Marisa C.
