The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/2\/a60690fafba3fa0e5a060772b6dd49a81b0656a76f75ec9477fd2c78be6fefaa?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemistry<\/a>\u00a0major from<strong> Apex, North Carolina<\/strong>, recently joined a select group of students named as a <strong>Goldwater Scholar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are especially proud to celebrate Nathaniel as the University of Mississippi&#8217;s 27th Goldwater Scholar, and our ninth in the past five years,&#8221; said Vivian Ibrahim, director of the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/3\/a368b5a92f227582d9f27a35899c57cfa499b6f418028a8459de6eef82299152?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of National Scholarship Advisement<\/a>.<\/strong> &#8220;Being named a <strong>Goldwater Scholar<\/strong> really signals that a student is on a path toward significant impact in their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;His recognition reflects not only his individual talent and determination, but also the strength of the mentoring and research environment here at UM.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/4\/8d898655957eed33ae017ddf44451ee53e537dd7e1dbf719aa2fa5f4d87ed526?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors planning to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering. Photo by Thomas Graning\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Learning how to do research is a non-trivial task, and this shows that he is not only capable of performing such, but he is capable of doing so at the highest level.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group of researchers use precise computer methods to study molecules found in space. The work is as practical as it is otherworldly, Carlson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many molecules believed to exist in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/5\/6967eb29da4c8858aa89f0e81486b22311968b177ce16b7c1e46eda9ff144b16?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interstellar medium<\/a>\u00a0are nearly impossible to synthesize under Earth conditions. That means scientists must calculate their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/6\/c39a4f92da2138988127fa354de42d7ba19f49c7b698a896fd5fd6d5e8b02a8c?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spectral properties<\/a>\u00a0mathematically before they can search for them using telescopes, such as the J<strong>ames Webb Space Telescope<\/strong> or the <strong>Green Bank Telescope<\/strong> in <strong>West Virginia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The big draw behind computational astrochemistry is the fact that a lot of the molecules we expect to be out in space can&#8217;t really be made efficiently here on Earth,&#8221; Carlson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The computational data we generate is essentially the roadmap for finding them out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlson is creating a roadmap to success of his own. The<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/7\/57a447032f9a2bc1f8aaf5d99cf983bdbebd723cd0d70a95f1cf076609dfd6a6?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>Journal of Chemical Physics<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0published his methanetriol research, and he was listed as the first author \u2013 a rare and difficult achievement for an undergraduate \u2013 along with Fortenberry and<strong> Zachary Palmer<\/strong>, a Fortenberry Lab alumnus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The compound at the center of his research exists naturally only at temperatures below minus 441 degrees Fahrenheit and under intense radiation, he said. Scientists believe it may be present in cometary ice grains in significant quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astrobiologists<strong> <\/strong>are specifically interested in what the molecule produces when it breaks down because it may shine new light onto the origins of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nathaniel is perpetually curious,&#8221; Fortenberry said. &#8220;He always wants to know how to arrive at the answer from as many perspectives as possible. He wants to know the easy way, the hard way, the long way and the roundabout way to get there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlson has taken his research beyond the borders of campus. He completed a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in 2024. He also presented research at a recent\u00a0event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his road to chemistry may seem unconventional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He initially enrolled as a music major at another university and found that the enjoyment of performing didn&#8217;t necessarily translate into a career calling. After a difficult academic stretch, he took time away from school then transferred to Ole Miss, pivoting to study the same field in which his mother earned her master&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlson still nurtures his love for music. He plays tuba in the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/9\/ebe6977b18cbc1182aa7bfa21966a9d2fa7488251a08be0f20db61d620fb3318?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pride of the South<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>marching band and saxophone in a UM\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/10\/3afb7e9e814229b071ea9f5ecc4de2286fcfdaa5bd5f9bb47d55fe5e9937fca9?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jazz ensemble<\/a>. He is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/07f0faf631774523bc1f1d9d832ad885\/11\/6a45f6480b39f2475c2816ca8340eea52d0cdb1bfaab110a72c78e2bb63abf4c?cache_buster=1775749462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set to perform<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday (April 15) with the jazz ensembles in the<strong> Gertrude C.
