A book-themed edition of <em>Thacker Mountain Jr. <\/em>is set for 6 pm Friday, March 27, at the <strong>Powerhouse Community Arts Center.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show includes authors from the <strong>Children&#8217;s Book Festival<\/strong> of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6512b2e0809c4770826247ad641fa0d4\/1\/0768df1176d80bebdd0a73b545353877fcfe54671cdb220317931ce3c7802f08?cache_buster=1774294327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Oxford Conference for the Book<\/strong><\/a>, live music and a book signing. It is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show began in 2018 as a collaboration between the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6512b2e0809c4770826247ad641fa0d4\/2\/1127966cbce35bf35410e8825fa8e2bc283d10db187db08efa1b708abb64f86d?cache_buster=1774294327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Mississippi<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6512b2e0809c4770826247ad641fa0d4\/3\/1df3d4741e39f199a5707fa3559a0dbb6654704d1d6293189823032eb7cf7e82?cache_buster=1774294327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Living Music Resource<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and <em>Thacker Mountain Radio Hour<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>Ava Street Broome<\/strong>, a music education major from Purvis,\u00a0served as executive director of <em>Thacker Mountain Jr<\/em>. in 2019 and 2020 before COVID-19 brought the project to a halt. She also created an operations manual for the production as part of her capstone project for the <strong>Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lucy Gaines<\/strong>, Thacker Mountain&#8217;s executive director, contacted <strong>Nancy Maria Balach<\/strong>, chair of the <strong>UM&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6512b2e0809c4770826247ad641fa0d4\/4\/7cb9c6621535b7ddd2d58b35a7f929a7e5b2d76c5bf8ce112d2847cb834151a6?cache_buster=1774294327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Music<\/a><\/strong>, last year about relaunching the children&#8217;s radio hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was important to us to bring this project back not only because it bridges the university and Oxford communities, but also because it allows students and kids to leap towards lively careers in the arts right here in Mississippi,&#8221; Gaines said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week&#8217;s show will feature\u00a0<strong>Lindsey Currie<\/strong>, best-selling author of mysteries for young readers, including <strong><em>The<\/em> <em>Mystery of Locked Rooms<\/em><\/strong>, this year&#8217;s fifth-grade book for the Children&#8217;s Book Festival;\u00a0<strong>Sarah Frances Hardy<\/strong>, Oxford-based illustrator of <strong><em>One Mississippi<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0this year&#8217;s first-grade selection; She said she is excited about working with Balach and Gaines to bring back <em>Thacker Mountain Jr.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the reasons I came to Ole Miss was for the opportunities available to develop myself professionally,&#8221; Pannell said. &#8220;When professor Balach asked me about directing <em>Thacker Jr.<\/em>, I was enthusiastic but hesitant, since I had never done something like this before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During this journey, I have learned many behind-the-scenes aspects of running a show.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pannell and LMR students hosted open-call auditions in late February, attracting some 20 students vying for roles as hosts and musicians.
