{"id":156619,"date":"2026-04-02T07:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T12:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=156619"},"modified":"2026-04-07T15:47:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:47:30","slug":"the-lafayette-county-master-gardeners-are-pleased-to-welcome-the-public-to-their-annual-spring-lecture-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/the-lafayette-county-master-gardeners-are-pleased-to-welcome-the-public-to-their-annual-spring-lecture-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Lafayette County Master Gardeners: April Garden Calendar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Planting&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set out most shrubs and trees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Divide violets, Shasta daisies, liriope, ajuga, mums, and other perennials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant okra, melons, peas, corn, beans, eggplant, cucumbers, and tomatoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set out summer annuals if danger of frost has passed: ageratum, alyssum, begonias, geraniums, dianthus, celosia, marigolds, moss roses, petunias, impatiens, coleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant summer\/fall blooming bulbs: callas, cannas, dahlias, gladiolus, and gloriosa lilies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fertilizing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fertilize vegetables at planting according to recommendations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fertilize shrubs if not done in March.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pest Control<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spray new rose leaves for black spot weekly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pruning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disbud roses and peonies for specimen flowers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightly shape any formal hedges to remove new growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prune azaleas and other spring-flowering shrubs after blooming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mulch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Replenish mulch around Azaleas and Camellias. To properly mulch, apply 2-3 inches of mulch to the base of trees and shrubs. If mulching trees, do not place mulch in direct contact with the tree trunk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miscellaneous<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paint and repair garden furniture and other hardscapes (bird baths, bird houses, mailbox, deck).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy azaleas in bloom to be sure of color.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always mulch new plantings to help ensure success.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hummingbirds are here! Fitts Auditorium<\/strong> of the <strong>Oxford &amp; Lafayette Public Library<\/strong> at <strong>401 Bramlett Boulevard<\/strong>. Chris Cooper serves as the UT Extension County Director in Shelby County (Memphis).
