It was verified in the 1930s by a local <strong>Daughters of the American Revolution<\/strong> (DAR) chapter. However its authenticity is disputed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAs a Photographer, Civil War Historian, and Oxford Native, I have closely examined this photograph,\u201d said <strong>Newt Rayburn<\/strong>. \u201cIf it is authentic, then the remains of the old Cumberland Church must be on the left hand side of this photograph.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cJudging from the shadows and the point of view, this was probably shot after noon in the vicinity near where Frank &amp; Marlee\u2019s is today,\u201d Newt Rayburn continued. \u201cThe building in the background on the far right was probably located on the Southwest side of The Square.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThere are other possibilities,\u201d Newt Rayburn concluded. \u201cBut this location is very strong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14544\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This photograph is thought to show the devastation of Oxford, Mississippi after August 22, 1864.
