Atkinson<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> officials are working to integrate virtues into campus life while recognizing those who personify the traits through an initiative launched this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/352c9cbaf2ab4bb7b97ee43884ebe363\/1\/a6fa69d2b11a5a1f5413712ffa7c7b43afd573e946a78d160e106465520990e7?cache_buster=1765394833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The\u00a0<strong>Center for Practical Ethics<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0partnered with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/352c9cbaf2ab4bb7b97ee43884ebe363\/2\/c0de16ab16a44f0b09cfb4d71744a342759c6f2972a80c5081846274cd2acc09?cache_buster=1765394833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Trent Lott Leadership Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to create the Character of Leaders Initiative with funding from Wake Forest University&#8217;s Educating Character Initiative. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/352c9cbaf2ab4bb7b97ee43884ebe363\/3\/61f000299e3b14dc20152cd7f763150bd00f97ad1c63182e1fde3e90646ea5cb?cache_buster=1765394833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initiative is in its second year<\/a>,\u00a0led by <strong>Deborah Mower<\/strong>, director of the ethics center, and <strong>Melissa Jones<\/strong>, associate director of the Lott Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cohort of 31 Ole Miss faculty and staff began its virtue studies this fall. Jones said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative works to mold leaders and focuses on developing the virtues within the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/352c9cbaf2ab4bb7b97ee43884ebe363\/4\/8c4362ecf4225f35dd638f3cb8682b076bc0c8d139de886420e5e7b6bd831f2a?cache_buster=1765394833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UM Creed<\/a>&nbsp;because those qualities are essential, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The initiative addresses this need by integrating moral, civic, and intellectual virtues into the culture at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/352c9cbaf2ab4bb7b97ee43884ebe363\/5\/32a65ac8bcd4d9fae7a6798afba880919000854cf4a30074dab9de19adf86a20?cache_buster=1765394833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Mississippi<\/a>,&#8221; Mower said. &#8220;It builds on the UM Creed and decades of character education to create a unified, interdisciplinary approach to developing ethical and effective leaders across all areas of the university.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The professional tutelage includes participating in a yearlong schedule involving workshops, book studies, presentations and speakers by which participants learn and think about how to apply learned elements into their courses and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s unique is that we have a cohort that will design classes and think how to create an integrated, consistent set of experiences for students focused on character,&#8221; Mower said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cohort members will ultimately incorporate what they learn to their own area of instruction and research by building or refining a course focusing on character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because faculty, staff, and students are so intertwined, students \u2013 and therefore, the university \u2013 will benefit from this initiative and become stronger leaders with character because of this professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We all impact each other, each of us contributing to the culture and reputation of our university,&#8221; lives better,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Exemplar Award recognized faculty, staff and students for demonstrating the core virtues of fairness, respect, integrity, civility and intellectual humility of the UM Creed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Exemplar Award recipients are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Faculty: Kirsten Dellinger<\/strong>, College of Liberal\u00a0Arts associate dean for access and strategic initiatives and professor of sociology; and <strong>Rebekah Smith<\/strong>, professor of psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Students: Abolfazl Afshin<\/strong>, a graduate student in engineering science from\u00a0Zahedan, Iran; and <strong>Noah Watts<\/strong>, a graduate student studying higher education\/student personnel from New Albany<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Staff: Kim Chrestman<\/strong>, higher education operations coordinator; and <strong>Tressie Johnson<\/strong>, custodial services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Creed represents values I strive to embody every day, and receiving this recognition reminds me that those efforts truly matter,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;It isn&#8217;t about perfection, but about consistently choosing to do what&#8217;s right even when it isn&#8217;t easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This honor encourages me to continue serving my community, uplifting others and leading with authenticity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Community Award recognized individuals who represent the same core virtues in how they establish connections, friendships and networks in creating community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recipients of the Community Awards are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Faculty: David Henry Holben<\/strong>, professor of nutrition and hospitality management; <strong>Molly Pasco-Pranger<\/strong>, professor of classics; and <strong>Brianna Richmond<\/strong>, graduate instructor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Students: Emily Davis<\/strong>, a senior exercise science major from Benton, Louisiana; <strong>Alejandro Garcia<\/strong>, a graduate student in psychology from Los Angeles; and junior <strong>Emma Wilbourne<\/strong>, of Lewisburg, studying psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Staff: Annabelle Harris<\/strong>, College of Liberal Arts admissions counselor; <strong>Zoe Moore<\/strong>, teacher education administrative assistant; and <strong>Matt Ward<\/strong>, psychology operations manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It felt really nice to feel seen.&#8221; Harris said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris works with the college&#8217;s ambassador program that welcomes and fields questions from prospective students to ensure they receive the experience they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s what this university is all about \u2013 reaching out and bringing people up,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Because if you want to do it, you can; the ambassador program helps do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also wants to make sure that ambassadors benefit from the experience.
