{"id":154024,"date":"2025-12-08T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=154024"},"modified":"2025-12-08T15:27:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T21:27:22","slug":"foundation-gift-benefits-childrens-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/foundation-gift-benefits-childrens-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Foundation Gift Benefits Children&#8217;s Health Care"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Ware Foundation supports cleft and craniofacial treatment at UMMC<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>by Bill Dabney<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some patients at <strong>Children&#8217;s of Mississippi<\/strong> being treated for a craniofacial syndrome, cleft lip, and palate or another craniofacial abnormality stand to benefit from a recent gift to the <strong>University of Mississippi Medical Center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Ware Foundation<\/strong>, represented by <strong>Elizabeth Eason<\/strong>, of <strong>Madison<\/strong>, has given $150,000 to support the treatments and research being carried out at the UMMC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/93489f5623c8452b81600621bc173b86\/1\/fe9c0582fd51550ed7d627b0502212f78d3eba9f6b768e6e08f2e3ee04a16f7c?cache_buster=1765045170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Stephanie and Mitchell Morris Center for Cleft and Craniofacial Research and Innovation<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eason, the foundation&#8217;s president and executive director, said several factors inspired the gift: a family passion for health care, especially benefiting children from low-resource households; the involvement and encouragement of patients&#8217; parents in the treatment process; and a desire to inspire other donors to support the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our foundation provides mostly seed money; we like to help get things started,&#8221; said Eason, who has worked in dental care and whose father was a physician. &#8220;So, when (major gifts officer) Lee Pharr presented this opportunity to us, it sounded like our gift would help build more awareness for the Morris Center&#8217;s surgical work and research. It&#8217;s a good fit for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Morris Center<\/strong> provides a multidisciplinary team that includes specialists in plastic surgery, neurosurgery, genetics, speech therapy, dentistry, oral surgery, psychiatry, social work and audiology. It is the only site in Mississippi that provides the complex care craniofacial patients need and the only group of providers in the state accredited by the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides providing next-level treatments, the center supports research in the care of children with cleft and craniofacial abnormalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eason said her family&#8217;s gift is also in support of <strong>Dr. Laura S. Humphries<\/strong>, whose work they found impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humphries is an attending surgeon in the UMMC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/93489f5623c8452b81600621bc173b86\/2\/a2e2ca1af4dc2d86216ea010dfa09858c58fb28131284fa8f10a9ffbe63ab36a?cache_buster=1765045170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery<\/a>. She has expertise in craniomaxillofacial surgery, specializing in surgery of the skull, face, palate and jaw in infants, children, adolescents and adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her clinical and research interests include comprehensive cleft lip and palate care, treatment of congenital and acquired differences of the face and skull, and craniofacial trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The physician expressed gratitude for the foundation&#8217;s gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As we treat patients, engage in focused research and teach medical students, residents and fellows, we do so with an unwavering commitment to make a meaningful difference for children, now and in the years ahead,&#8221; Humphries said. &#8220;The Ware Foundation adds significant support to this mission, and we are grateful for Elizabeth and her family&#8217;s desire to help our patients.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Ian Hoppe<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s director and associate professor of plastic surgery, craniofacial surgery and pediatric plastic surgery, shared similar sentiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We always keep in sight the reason behind what we do,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Together, we bring our considerable expertise, abilities and resources to help our patients have the best possible lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Support for our physicians, researchers and providers, as well as our patients and their families, from donors like the Ware Foundation is critical to helping us achieve this goal.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 7,000 babies are born with cleft lips and\/or cleft palates each year in the U.S. Craniosynostosis, one of the most common craniofacial conditions, affects one in every 2,500 births.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals with cleft palate and craniofacial issues face a range of challenges, including difficulties with eating, speech, hearing, breathing and dental development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The physical differences associated with the condition can also negatively impact children&#8217;s self-esteem and lead to feelings of self-consciousness, particularly during social interactions. Individuals with clefts may experience social challenges, such as teasing, staring or difficulty feeling accepted, leading to anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early intervention, including feeding support, speech therapy and surgical repair, is crucial for minimizing the long-term impact of these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Morris Center is one of several entities supported by the Ware Foundation, including <strong>St. Dominic Health<\/strong>&#8216;s emergency room expansion, Children&#8217;s of Mississippi&#8217;s NICU expansion,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/93489f5623c8452b81600621bc173b86\/3\/d96c0db1362108414ace7526bf962e3231b933304f84bcb5b7dddeb8ae6a9434?cache_buster=1765045170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Canopy Children&#8217;s Solutions<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Mission Mississippi<\/strong>, <strong>South Miami Hospital<\/strong> and <strong>Nicklaus Children&#8217;s Hospital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ware Foundation was established by Eason&#8217;s great-grandfather, grandfather, and great uncle with funds earned by the water company her great-grandfather founded.
