Atkinson<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> students are finalists for the nation&#8217;s most prestigious academic honors: the <strong>Rhodes Scholarship<\/strong> and the <strong>Marshall Scholarship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sydney Guntharp<\/strong>, a senior English and political science major from <strong>Hernando<\/strong>, is the university&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/1\/d12d7d1992fd543490a532abe22b1f2046f5913e3b32d71694b29a1ba9f6b29a?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rhodes Scholarship<\/a>&nbsp;finalist. She is the sixth finalist in three years for <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marshall Scholarship finalist is <strong>Sophia Toner<\/strong>. The <strong>Pass Christian<\/strong> native is a senior in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/2\/cd4aa5ae6821626c45afb9d1b9667ef2340dda32a7c24428e2b5b011c8c8ba71?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Croft Institute for International Studies<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/3\/71594403b6b605b9210d132055c5d1860c69bb881ae75ffac876731bb03d03f6?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Chinese Language Flagship Program<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;with a minor in <strong>Russian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Being named a Rhodes or Marshall finalist places Sydney and Sophia among the most promising young scholars in the nation,&#8221;&nbsp;said <strong>Vivian Ibrahim<\/strong>, director of the university&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/4\/e51d36567de8d5c141ae2779d1671489587d2cae8e10517931dd7b1e88416cfc?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Office of National Scholarship Advisement<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;&#8220;Both awards recognize academic excellence paired with leadership and service, and their selection reflects not only their individual brilliance, but also the growing culture of global engagement and intellectual ambition at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/5\/578b54895319159d3cee62d283267ed4562c44e4e519a8b38f69d8ca999cc5d2?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Mississippi<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rhodes Scholarship allows students from across the globe to study at the <strong>University of Oxford<\/strong> in the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> to complete a master&#8217;s or doctoral degree. Ole Miss has produced 27 Rhodes scholars, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/6\/d5f31951e800bdbbcf9b626be8c3022a4d388b4df282c994ab4f8a8e470783fe?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Arielle Hudson<\/strong>, of <strong>Tunica<\/strong>, being the most recent<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guntharp is a Stamps Impact prize winner who founded a publication and organization called CORRE Collective that brings together artistic expression while providing community care and awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A member of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/7\/63799747bf4aa05e2c87802e7456c8ccd7d08c33336eda22404d7af254f6bf0c?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College<\/strong><\/a>, she is completing her Honors College thesis on AIDS cultural activism in the latter half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sydney is intellectually fearless, creatively driven, and deeply committed to justice and inclusion,&#8221; Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guntharp applied to be a Rhodes Scholar because of the academic and community opportunities afforded by Oxford University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am really invested in the question of how we bridge the gap between educational institutions and everyday life, and both the Rhodes Scholarship as well as Oxford value leaders who want to shape humanity&#8217;s future beyond the walls of the classroom,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is particularly interested in the school&#8217;s offerings in American literature and gender studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The programs both have faculty members who are invested in my central areas of research: AIDS history, literature, cultural activism, political print culture and the African American literary tradition,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If selected for the scholarship, Guntharp hopes to learn from a different university system, expand her educational&nbsp;horizons and challenge her abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hope to gain tangible strategies on how to become a public-facing scholar in the humanities, grow an international network and attain the educational background to pursue a doctorate in English literature, so that I can work in higher education,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her aspirations are as unique as her education at Ole Miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sydney&#8217;s work at Ole Miss, from founding a literary collective for queer and trans voices to her research and performance across disciplines exemplifies the transformative power of humanities education,&#8221; Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guntharp is scheduled to interview for the Rhodes Scholarship this weekend (Nov. 14-15) in Birmingham, Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/30774664ad9743a4a919cc54bf262d30\/8\/60c067ad9fb6b699954096edee1426a4d55d9779ead60da38e0213415eca7eeb?cache_buster=1762797545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marshall Scholarship<\/a>&nbsp;funds two years of graduate study at a British university of the scholar&#8217;s choosing.
