In honor of her lifelong dedication to the field, the <strong>Children&#8217;s Advocacy Centers of Mississippi<\/strong> recently presented her with its 2025 CAST Crusader Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digby, an instructional assistant professor of social work at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/0adfc2053d834bd6ac386da9f1028d8e\/1\/a7fd2678b931a45d4b5c56038f79a44f493ffdb074659a208883302bebb03fc1?cache_buster=1762446155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>, helped develop the university&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/0adfc2053d834bd6ac386da9f1028d8e\/2\/d633043cbe7b482efffd5786ba84d9b5d01e076599e0ccdb034f9670faf1e03e?cache_buster=1762446155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">child advocacy studies minor program<\/a>, known as CAST. She also recently helped launch the CARES (Child Advocacy Response and Education for Scholars) Club to engage students in supporting children and families affected by abuse and neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her work has been instrumental in building the <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> program and the <strong>Mississippi Academic Pathways Title IV E Program<\/strong>, said <strong>Keith Anderson<\/strong>, chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/0adfc2053d834bd6ac386da9f1028d8e\/3\/1b5a1a78489192a8c076cc9acad8448070195fd9a2c65b03fe291437727b4c82?cache_buster=1762446155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Department of Social Work<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Her work and dedication over her career to the children and families of Mississippi will reverberate for years to come and she is so&nbsp;deserving of this prestigious award,&#8221; Anderson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MAP program\u00a0is a grant through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/0adfc2053d834bd6ac386da9f1028d8e\/4\/61995135540a0bdf42e3156e5d6a416679586cd9c3cd050fb9264e2e43ec5c52?cache_buster=1762446155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and part of a collaboration of seven public universities. It\u00a0uses federal funding to assist college students majoring in social work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also provides internship opportunities with the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services at no cost for taxpayers, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/0adfc2053d834bd6ac386da9f1028d8e\/5\/40dc6c43e80de321e67fe46707e8be2ee2a0ef73c827304f3cef079643104c5e?cache_buster=1762446155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the <strong>Magnolia Tribune<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digby&#8217;s career began in 1984, when she joined the Department of Child Protective Services. After eight years, she moved to a private agency specializing in therapeutic group homes, foster care and adoption services for two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, she began training veteran and new CPS social workers through a grant from the university. She joined the Ole Miss faculty in 2017 and teaches at the university&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/0adfc2053d834bd6ac386da9f1028d8e\/6\/10994b526f77c7307404f948c92f8d722fd4e9e7d921a9b71c1a515050ae61aa?cache_buster=1762446155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tupelo<\/strong> regional campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students keep Digby motivated, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I really love the students,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I love working with them, watching their desire&nbsp;grown&nbsp;to learn about child abuse and neglect. They learn what to look for, as far as signs and symptoms, and hopefully this knowledge will allow them to make a difference in eradicating child abuse and neglect.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of CAST, students gain hands-on experience in simulation labs at the Tupelo and Oxford campuses. They conduct mock interviews with actors portraying caregivers in labs that simulate clients&#8217; homes in scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labs may include substance&nbsp;abuse materials such as&nbsp;pill bottles, alcohol and paraphernalia, items that a social worker walking into a home should notice to assess risk to children and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We also do simulations in a hospital setting \u2013 furnished by our community partners \u2013 where a child may come in for bruising or life-threatening situations, and then social worker was called in to assess whether or not the child is in danger,&#8221; Digby said. &#8220;We also go to court with the local youth court judge who presides over the child abuse\/neglect cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have also visited the local Children&#8217;s Advocacy Center and observed a mock forensic interview of a child.&nbsp;These experiences have just been amazing for these students in partnership with the child advocacy center.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digby works to encourage more students to pursue careers in child protective service work.
