{"id":153162,"date":"2025-11-04T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=153162"},"modified":"2025-11-03T15:03:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T21:03:20","slug":"university-of-mississippi-scientists-to-host-states-first-nanolithography-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-of-mississippi-scientists-to-host-states-first-nanolithography-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Mississippi Scientists to Host State&#8217;s First Nanolithography Facility"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>National Science Foundation helps Ole Miss secure first-of-its-kind tool for Mississippi<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> will soon host the state&#8217;s first fabrication tool that enables researchers to design and create structures on a nano scale, opening the door to collaborations both in <strong>Mississippi <\/strong>and across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b78eb64382ec410faf0fb28736faa3f2\/1\/ac82d5387aca5196e829d4da9f4851da871e6a2239743da759978cd9780d9088?cache_buster=1761927326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$673,000 <strong>National Science Foundation<\/strong> Major Research Instrumentation grant<\/a>\u00a0will fund the purchase of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b78eb64382ec410faf0fb28736faa3f2\/2\/ae1e4911495795fc779038b256d066d351f5c3f39c49ecc25c76d4cd56bb5970?cache_buster=1761927326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NanoFrazor Explore<\/a>, a tool that can &#8220;write&#8221; nanoscale and microscale patterns. Because a nanometer is about one-billionth of a meter, or roughly 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, these patterns are small enough to fit on the edge of a piece of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There were so many people on this proposal because this tool will have so many applications, both for this university and for other researchers,&#8221; said <strong>Vignesh Sundaresan<\/strong>, assistant professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b78eb64382ec410faf0fb28736faa3f2\/3\/5b773f1871ca17137e352a2612a7f95d48b064489f9b52ac9b318fdbc570d0d3?cache_buster=1761927326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemistry and biochemistry<\/a>. &#8220;We listed several research groups and centers that are already interested, and each one of those contains three or four people plus their graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Every one of them is going to benefit from using this technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tool will support 18 ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b78eb64382ec410faf0fb28736faa3f2\/4\/4087d3aea1415d83a4e3dba4350bf7ef69897598ba41fdaa25feea812cc99d60?cache_buster=1761927326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ole Miss<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0research groups in chemistry, physics, biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering, and enable projects ranging from drug delivery systems to wireless microheaters and renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having the first tool of its kind in the state will offer new opportunities for collaboration with other institutions and research centers across the South, said <strong>Nikki Reinemann<\/strong>, associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b78eb64382ec410faf0fb28736faa3f2\/5\/eac50daa978ee5286a360f5dd5ba3e1436fb19f14859816cead9610f9ee2b718?cache_buster=1761927326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biomedical engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Being the first NF Explore in Mississippi provides a unique resource to the state&#8217;s research,&#8221; Reinemann said. &#8220;This instrument will not only strengthen our own work but also be available for collaborations with colleagues in engineering, materials science and biomedical research across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Having this capability in Mississippi reduces reliance on out-of-state facilities and will foster partnerships among our state&#8217;s universities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NanoFrazor Explore simplifies researchers&#8217; efforts to create designs, structures and other formations at nanoscale, Sundaresan said. The difference is like going from a Gutenberg press to a modern-day printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you wanted to write in a particular font in the in the olden days, you would have to make the stencils,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And every time you wanted to change the font or a word, you&#8217;d have to make a new stencil. The same thing goes for this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If I want to substrate in a particular shape or size, then I need to prepare that stencil first; that takes time. What this allows us to do is called direct-write lithograph. We don&#8217;t need to make the stencil anymore because we can make changes directly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And like a printer, the applications are practically endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cecille Labuda, associate professor of physics and astronomy, will use the tool to design and test materials that can control how sound waves move. This research could improve technologies such as medical imaging and noninvasive sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We already have colleagues in Tennessee, for example. who have expressed interest in using it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This instrument will open up scientific avenues that we have not had access to before (and) allow us to grow and develop new research areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reinemann and her lab will use the technology to study motor proteins, which move things around in cells and help with cell division and muscle contraction. A better understanding of motor proteins can lead to biologically inspired diagnostic devices in health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, Reinemann&#8217;s team could study these proteins only in two-dimensional form. With the NanoFrazor Explore, that work can be done in 3D and with more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Having the NF Explore here will expand what we can do experimentally,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Instead of being constrained to 2D assays, we&#8217;ll be able to create 3D nanostructures and microenvironments that better mimic the inside of a cell.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yiwei Han, associate professor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/b78eb64382ec410faf0fb28736faa3f2\/6\/508fa5ca2a6a779182f41f873fc9594f7593eecb885d14aa2118031dfe2562c6?cache_buster=1761927326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mechanical engineering<\/a>, will use the device in his ongoing study of wireless microheaters.
