{"id":152966,"date":"2025-10-27T11:38:41","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T16:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=152966"},"modified":"2025-10-27T13:53:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T18:53:01","slug":"ole-miss-researcher-lands-nsf-funding-for-brain-inspired-chip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-researcher-lands-nsf-funding-for-brain-inspired-chip\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Researcher Lands NSF Funding for Brain-Inspired Chip"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Proposed device combines short- and long-term memory to boost AI efficiency, performance<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>by Jordan Karnbach<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing energy needs for data centers and artificial intelligence computing generated an idea for two researchers who are trying to solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sakib Hasan<\/strong>, assistant professor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/711e75967a65453bb4e60f49d4cd88dd\/1\/986467a4e5874f4fcb7c40b9d74d273c2945b76b2b5184f2097ee76cc09c8bbc?cache_buster=1761324446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electrical and computer engineering<\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/711e75967a65453bb4e60f49d4cd88dd\/2\/bcbd1f01611bfce1d5b53f925f4b7bb3491b396a281c5a346761f59935548d8b?cache_buster=1761324446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong><\/a>, and <strong>Raisul Islam<\/strong>, assistant professor of materials engineering at <strong>Purdue University<\/strong>, are developing a device inspired by synapses \u2013 the point where one nerve cell communicates with another \u2013 in a human brain to integrate long-term and short-term memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The device, which they call a diffusive ferroelectric field-effect transistor, would allow users to use AI more efficiently by having the calculations done on smaller devices instead of having to rely on energy-hungry data centers. The problem with this approach is how to provide enough energy for the smaller devices to use AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are hypothesizing that this new device\u2026 can enable us to do this with very low energy, because it has short-term memory,&#8221; Hasan said. &#8220;It peaks for a little bit, then it forgets. In other words, remembering is important, but forgetting is also equally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What makes the human brain efficient is that it forgets; it&#8217;s a big part of learning anyway.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A ferroelectric field-effect transistor is basically a kind of memory device that doesn&#8217;t forget, Islam said. Once you save information on it, the data stays put even if the power is turned off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The importance of this project comes from being able to add short-term memory dynamics to the long-term memory of ferroelectric FETs,&#8221; Islam said. &#8220;The long-term memory can even influence how long the short-term memory lasts, similar to how the brain sometimes holds onto information for just a moment and other times for much longer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/711e75967a65453bb4e60f49d4cd88dd\/3\/702c1dc6c2526adb0bd275f6fc90df08b01c77491469ee29ea5bc5a84a3e7676?cache_buster=1761324446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Science Foundation<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;provided a grant for $655,000 to support this collaborative effort, which could have wide-ranging applications in AI hardware and energy-efficient computing. Hasan is the principal investigator for the UM award (no. 2521469) and Islam is the PI for the Purdue award (<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/711e75967a65453bb4e60f49d4cd88dd\/4\/ea3d40cc568cc99560b7c3e02de30e8ea32ede6007307877b5c22e991403e2d9?cache_buster=1761324446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2521468<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I see this as a truly crucial grant,&#8221; Hasan said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been working in this area for quite some time, but I lacked the facilities and experimental expertise&nbsp;that Dr. Islam at Purdue brings to the table. His ability to realize actual devices in hardware fills a critical missing piece of the puzzle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He and Islam have applied for a U.S. patent on the idea, and they are already working on a second patent. Islam is working on the physical device while Hasan develops the software framework for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Eventually, when his device results mature, we&#8217;ll put them into our software model and test whether our hypothesis actually works,&#8221; Hasan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are really two milestones: first, whether the device will actually work as intended, and second, even if it does, whether it delivers the benefits we expect.
