{"id":152802,"date":"2025-10-22T13:17:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T18:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=152802"},"modified":"2025-10-22T13:17:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T18:17:56","slug":"ole-miss-internship-brings-soul-force-into-digital-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-internship-brings-soul-force-into-digital-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Internship Brings Soul Force Into Digital Age"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Partnership offers applied learning, archival skills and access to Black voices from the 1970s to 2000s<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Marvis Herring<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>University of Mississippi <\/strong>partnership with a community cultural center is bringing decades of <strong>Black Oxford <\/strong>history into the digital age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a new internship with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6052ba4ba6f2431fbff1c2cd8243c11a\/1\/164992e485b9bb5f503f895edf60233ca4fcf51e522a11470845eb4434034631?cache_buster=1760634788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Burns-Belfry Museum and Multicultural Center<\/strong><\/a>, doctoral student <strong>Gabbie Bowden<\/strong> digitized more than two decades of <strong><em>Soul Force<\/em><\/strong>, a community newsletter that began chronicling weddings, church events, political commentary, and everyday life in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6052ba4ba6f2431fbff1c2cd8243c11a\/2\/9a981ee34a699df293924e29efe31fbeb76602a163019364756fe791d5b0612f?cache_buster=1760634788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Freedmen Town<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, supported by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6052ba4ba6f2431fbff1c2cd8243c11a\/3\/2ca11b8961e258d2750cf6fc8b24cf97a4d5bef6c17a92fbe1eecfec471b6e31?cache_buster=1760634788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M Partner<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6052ba4ba6f2431fbff1c2cd8243c11a\/4\/f74ccbfd2901c33021e832af5be6e87ed14adea1d0ce056a3f7c0ac5d29731d6?cache_buster=1760634788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of English<\/a>,<\/strong> preserves a vital record of Black families and community voices for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There was a very tangible feeling of accomplishment helping put this information out to the digital world,&#8221; said Bowden, of Gulfport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These editions are very journalistic in terms of their inclusion of comments on national, local, and international events, and they also included baby announcements and educational materials that clearly promoted community among its readers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-1024x683.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152804 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?resize=2048%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHM_0264-AE-scaled.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Built in 1910, the Burns-Belfry building was once <strong>Burns Methodist Episcopal Church<\/strong>, organized by freed African Americans who settled in the area known as Freedmen Town after the Civil War. The <strong>Oxford Development Association<\/strong>, a nonprofit founded to improve education in the Black community, began there in 1970 and launched <em>Soul Force<\/em> as its monthly newsletter.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer, Bowden spent more than 180 hours meticulously scanning and cataloging more than 20 years of <em>Soul Force<\/em>&#8216;s monthly issues from the museum&#8217;s collection. The experience deepened her appreciation for the power of community storytelling, the responsibility of preserving it, and the importance of making record accessible, Bowden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Whether you&#8217;re a researcher interested in 20th century local publishing, a community organization, or someone looking for details about family members involved in the Oxford Development Association, this project can help a lot people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ole Miss and its students have a history of collaborating on Burns-Belfry projects, helping in areas museum staff identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum operates with a staff of volunteers and <strong>Sheila Baker Howard<\/strong>, board chair at the historic center, said the positive impact of this collaboration between the university and museum is immeasurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While archiving decades of newsletters, Bowden was intrigued when she found a multi-year series that included academic lessons on Black history in America, starting from the 1600s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They were providing access to academic text and historical analysis, disseminating information \u2013 not just opinions or local stories \u2013 but educating and informing the community,&#8221; Bowden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two faculty leaders who helped create the internship believe the opportunity reflects how connecting Ole Miss students with public-facing scholarship can benefit communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our discipline&#8217;s expertise in literary and cultural studies lines up nicely with this kind of archival research,&#8221; said <strong>Jason Solinger<\/strong>, associate professor of English and director of graduate studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The best work in literary studies and in the humanities has a public-facing component. McAlexander Chair in English and director of the cinema studies minor, noted that landing jobs in the academy after graduation can feel like competing for a spot on a professional sports team, but Bowden&#8217;s summer internship adds a competitive edge and transferable skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hands-on projects like this give our students transferable skills in archiving, digital humanities and community partnership,&#8221; Purcell said. &#8220;Whether they pursue academic roles or other professions, they leave Ole Miss with experience that connects scholarship to service.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Laura Martin<\/strong>, associate director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.us.nylas.com\/l\/6052ba4ba6f2431fbff1c2cd8243c11a\/5\/634c08ff18e6ab9303de341cbc8166f362fa0fcdcd8b13bdac6ac03a80262adc?cache_buster=1760634788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and M Partner director, emphasized the university&#8217;s role in building sustainable, reciprocal partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This new partnership between the Department of English and the Burns-Belfry has deepened M Partner&#8217;s work in Oxford, and promises to have a lasting impact,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The Soul Force project is connected to ongoing oral history and website development initiatives, and we are grateful to our partners at the Belfry for trusting us with these powerful stories.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transported through time, the archive will &#8220;provide a microscopic lens of the broader American picture of what was happening within the &#8217;70s, &#8217;80s and &#8217;90s,&#8221; Bowden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital archive is still taking shape as the museum tracks down missing editions, mostly from the &#8217;70s, Howard said. She recently met began meetings with a small group of Ole Miss law students and <strong>Marie Saliba Cope<\/strong>, director of the <strong>Transactional Law Clinic<\/strong> and co-director of the <strong>Business Law Institute<\/strong>, as legal consultants before sharing the content online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting to think about someone finding their grandparent&#8217;s name in an announcement, or researchers finding a new way to understand Black community life in Oxford,&#8221; Bowden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We lit the fire.
